A Call to Courage

Last words …

A Call to Courage Joshua 23:1 Joshua’s Farewell to the Leaders After a long time had passed and the LORD had given Israel rest from all their enemies around them …

A Call to Courage Joshua 23:9-11 “The LORD has driven out before you great and powerful nations; to this day no one has been able to withstand you. One of you routs a thousand, because the LORD your God fights for you, just as he promised. So be very careful to love the LORD your God.

A Call to Courage Joshua 24: “You can’t do it!” … Old Covenant So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.’

A Call to Courage “Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.”

A Call to Courage Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the LORD to serve other gods! It was the LORD our God himself who brought us and our parents up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, and performed those great signs before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we travelled. And the LORD drove out before us all the nations, including the Amorites, who lived in the land. We too will serve the LORD, because he is our God.”

A Call to Courage Verses Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the LORD. He is a holy God; He is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins. If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to you.”

A Call to Courage Joshua 24:2 Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your ancestors, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River and worshiped other gods.

A Call to Courage

Hebrews 8: 7-12 For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. But God found fault with the people and said:

A Call to Courage “The days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord.

A Call to Courage This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”

A Call to Courage 3 things to notice about the New Covenant: 1.Internal motivation to be faithful (8:10-11) 2.Forgiveness of sin (8:12)

A Call to Courage Hebrews 8:12 (NIV) “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” Psalm 103:12 (CEV) “How far has the LORD taken our sins from us? Farther than the distance from east to west!”

A Call to Courage 3 things to notice about the New Covenant: 3. Eternal rest (9:15). Never-ending relationship in God’s presence!

A Call to Courage Last Word: Hebrews 13:20-21 (CEB) May the God of peace, who brought back the great shepherd of the sheep, our Lord Jesus, from the dead by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with every good thing to do his will, by developing in us what pleases him through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory forever and always. Amen.
