Whitlock (Buffalo)

Definition of VoD Video-on-Demand entails the client- initiated streaming of a digital video file from server to client. VoD can be be live or archived, unicast or multicast.

Goals Enable the R&E community to effectively and securely access digital video resources Ensure judicious use of digital video resources Coordinate with international metadata efforts Engage industry players

Objectives Identify high priority scenarios Identify middleware requirements from scenarios Coordinate with NMI project plan Coordinate with VidMid VC subgroup Distinguish short from mid to long term middleware development Develop project plan for one year effort

VoD Scenario #1 Frank is a student in the English Theater 201 class. His current assignment is to analyze death scenes in Shakespearean plays, and present five video clips to illustrate his written assignment. The class instructor has put a collection of Shakespeare's plays on reserve in the library online collection, limiting access to English Theater 201 students.

VoD Scenario #1 Frank accesses the web-based reserve catalogue, and clicks on the link to English Theater 201. Once he uses his user name and password, a list of available movies and clips is displayed. Frank uses the search engine to do some keyword searches. He only has permission to view the clips, and cannot capture any content, so he will bookmark the segments he chooses, and present the bookmarks in his homework.

Scenario #1 (Simple): Middleware Requirements Frank accesses the web-based reserve catalogue, and clicks on the link to English Theater 201. Once he uses his user name and password [authentication/authorization], a list of available movies and clips is displayed. Frank uses the search engine to do some keyword searches [descriptive metadata]. He only has permission to view the clips, and cannot capture any content [rights metadata], so he will bookmark the segments he chooses, and present the bookmarks as part of his assignment [metadata].

Workplan Development By 11/15: Design (Consistency with NMI Initiative and Architecture) Implementation Test bed Dissemination Roles? Resource Requirements? Deliverables?

Potential Deliverables [Authentication/Authorization] Develop white paper on role of directories in accessing digital video resources Develop digital video portal to test emerging AA mechanisms [Descriptive Metadata] Develop a digital video portal to test ViDe Dublin Core AP for digital video

Potential Deliverables [Rights Metadata] Develop a rights metadata application profile for R&E Develop a test bed implementation of the rights metadata AP (digital video portal?) [Metadata/Bookmarking] Develop MPEG-7 application profile for digital video

Scenario #1 (Complex) Middleware Requirements Frank accesses the web-based reserve catalogue, and clicks on the link to English Theater 201. Once he uses his user name and password [authentication/authorization], a list of available movies and clips is displayed. The version of Hamlet Frank wants to view is not available at his own institution. However, he is allowed access to a copy at Indiana University [rights metadata] and is authenticated at IU [inter-realm AA].
