beat, defeat, win, succeed 1)beat, defeat 都表示在战斗中或竞赛中 “ 战胜、打败 ( 对手 )” ，后接竞争对手，可以 互换。如： beat the competitor / the country / the team… 打败对手 / 国家 / 那个队 …… I can beat/defeat you at swimming. 我游 泳比得过你。 He was defeated/beaten at chess. 他棋下 输了。

except, besides & but but 通常是与 not 连用的。如： I don’t like apples but bananas. 我不喜欢苹 果而喜欢香蕉。 except 表示不计算之前的一个，是减法。如： Everyone came except John. （ John 没来） besides 与 except 相反，是加法。如： I like apples besides bananas. ( 我喜欢香蕉的同时喜欢苹果 )

enormous, huge, large & big enormous 表示 “ 特别巨大的，超乎寻常 的大（比如形容大象） ”; huge 、 large 、 big 都表示大的， 它们的区别不大， 有些 是固定用法如 a large number of 而 big 多用 于口语，用的也较多。
