Structure of an Animal Cell: the basic unit of structure and function in living things. Tissue: A group of similar cells that perform a specific function. Organ: A group of several different tissues. Organ System: A group of organs working together. Organism: Any living Thing!

Functions of Animals obtain food oxygen keep internal conditions stable Move reproduce.

Adaptations Adaptations: Structures or behaviors that allow animals to perform basic functions in their environment. A dog keeps cool by panting. A Giraffe has a long neck to reach the tall leaves.

Obtaining Food An animals must obtain food by eating other organisms. Plant eaters – herbivores Meat eaters – carnivores Plant & meat eaters – omnivores What are you???

Keeping Conditions Stable Cells that get too hot or cold die Ex: a Burn – frost bite This is why we sweat – to keep our bodies cool.

Movement All animals move in some way. Ex: swimming, walking, crawling, hopping… Animals move for basic survival needs: food & shelter

Reproduction Sexual Reproduction: a new organism develops from the joining of two sex cells – a male sperm cell & a female egg cell. Fertilization: When the sperm and egg join. New organisms will have characteristics from both parents. Asexual Reproduction: when a single organism produces a new organism identical to itself.

Vertebrates: Animals with a backbone Invertebrate: Animals without a backbone
