NSTX NSTX Team Meeting –Masa Ono April 25, 2014 NSTX-U Department Activities in Q2 FY 14 Significant collaboration research contributions are being made in diverse science areas by the NSTX-U research team. On-going active research collaboration particularly with DIII-D and EAST. Several activities resulted in IAEA synopses. A good set of IAEA synopses (~ 30) accepted by IAEA. Favorable budget should enable preparation for the NSTX-U operation while completing the Upgrade Project. Some resources maybe available to start the design work on high priority five year plan enhancements. –MG motor generator repair procurement should be concluded in the near future and the work to start in May. –Firing generators were installed. It is ready for test when the DCPS is avaiiable. –HHFW antenna should be re-installed in early May along with the P-CHERs passive plates. –In-vessel diagnostic installation/reinstallation work is in progress. NSTX NSTX Team Meeting –Masa Ono April 25, 2014 FY 14 NSTX-U PEMP Notable Outcomes Goal 1.0Mission Accomplishment FES: Carry out scenario modeling and research planning to ensure a strong NSTX-U research program in FY (Objective 1.1) Part of the high priority NSTX-U research activities including enhanced modelling of NSTX-U current ramp-up by Francesca Poli (PPPL). Favorable budget helping this area of program activity. FES: Analyze experimental data from FES major facilities to investigate and quantify plasma response to non-axisymmetric (3D) mangetic fields in tokamaks, in support of the FES joint research target. (Objective 1.1) NSTX-U researchers, Jong-kyu Park (PPPL) and John Canik (ORNL) are co-leading the effort at PPPL. Goal 2.0 Design, Fabrication, Construction and Operation of Research Facilities FES: Continue to maintain the NSTX-U project with 10% of cost and schedule. (Objective 2.2) The NSTX Upgrade project is supported at the highest priority from the NSTX Program side. The preparation for operation of the NSTX-U research facility has begun by the NSTX-U engineering and research operations team. Favorable budget is helping this area of program activity. Ron Hatcher’s recent passing has created special challenges in various areas including DCPS, CHI, and ISTP. Goal 3.0 Program Management. FES: Expand engagement with university scientists to enhance the NSTX-U program. (Objective 3.2) C-Mod collaboration contract in place, but postponed at least 1 year due to C-Mod operations. Favorable budget helping fund collaborators, also holding team-wide meetings to identify ways of expanding university engagement.
