Teaching Lacrosse Officials

Objectives Understanding of Different styles of learners and facilitators Different Activities for Officials Clinics Do’s and Don’t of Clinics Presentation Tips

Types of Learners Visual Learners: – Learn Through Seeing... Auditory Learners – Learn Through Listening…. Kinesthetic Learners – Learn Through Moving, Doing & Touching

Types of Learners What does this mean? – Clinics must be multi faceted – Reading the rule book is not enough – Visual Aids should include PowerPoint With Highlights Handouts (Rule Books) must have detail Seeing Visual Examples goes a long way – Some officials will not get it until they see it themselves

Instructor vs. Facilitator Instructor: – Leads Discussions – Teaches Technical Points Facilitator – Guides Conversations – Seeks Impute and Guides Discussions Realty is that a Clinic Leader must be good at both of these!

Clinic Leaders Clinic Leaders should be good at: – Rules and Mechanics The best official does not make the best instructor Should Practice what they preach – Reading a Room Is group engaged – Controlling a Room Are there side conversations IMPORTANT – Great “Rules Guys” does not necessarily make a good instructor or clinic leader

Different Clinic Activities Video Review – Use Proper Set up and Discloser Mechanics Stations Quiz Reviews Different Clinics for New Officials vs Veterans Anonymous Questions and Answer Multiple Instructors – Start new facilitators on easy topic

Do’s and Don’ts Do’s Be Prepared Solicit Questions Have a variety at each Clinic Use Multiple teaching tools Do more than just the rules at each session – Keep it fresh Have Fun Don’ts Read the rule book only Let veterans talk about plays from games 30 years ago Use Technology you are not familiar with Make fun of officials who made mistakes

Presentation Tips Establish Learning Objectives for each Clinic Be Prepared Make Eye Contact Walk the Room Keep PowerPoint's Simple & Clutter Free Use Graphics that are relevant

Presentation Tips Use Remote Presenter Black out screen to gain people’s attention on key points Never leave a question unanswered unless 100% needed Use a parking lot concept to issues or questions you need to address at another time
