 The university was founded in 1931 as the Saratov financial and economic institute.  In 1938 it is renamed into the Saratov credit and economic institute.  And in 1946 the Saratov credit and economic institute is merged into the Saratov planned institute and received the new name - the Saratov economic institute.  Further, in 1994 the Saratov economic institute is renamed into the Saratov state economic academy.  Later, in 1999 the Saratov state economic academy is renamed into the Saratov state social and economic university.
