PBL, STEM & STEAM: What’s the difference? Your Name Here Your Title Here Your School Here stemcobb

PBL, STEM, and STEAM Show what you know

Common Misconceptions STEM, STEAM, and PBL are time consuming. STEM, STEAM, and PBL are all the same thing. Only the brightest students can do STEM, STEAM, and PBL. My school doesn’t have the resources for STEM, STEAM, and PBL. All projects are PBL.

WHAT DOES MEAN? Problem Based Learning Project Based Learning Performance Based Learning Premier Basketball League

How we approach problems to solve them makes a difference

PROBLEM-BASED LEARNING Focused on open-ended question or problem Provide students with opportunities to apply of content and skills to the real-world Build 21 st Century skills of creativity, communication, collaboration, critical thinking Enable students to “dig deeper” into concepts using a multifaceted integrated approach Emphasize student inquiry

PBL Examples Social Studies focused projects –Economics focused projects –Civics and community issues projects Language Arts projects –Develop a collection of resources (sample letter templates, talking points, summary of relevant research, etc…) around an issue of interest.

STEM is a form of PBL STEM education programs in Cobb cultivate problem-solvers through project-based learning and engaged critical thinking with an integrated curriculum in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Students create, design, build, discover, and collaborate while developing contextual connections between school, community, work, and the global environment.

What is STEM? STEM Program Characteristics: 1.Interdisciplinary instruction 2.Integration of Problem/Project-Based Learning 3.Emphasis on real-world product development 4.Collaborations with business and industry partners in the geographical area 5.Using technology as a facilitation of student learning in a transformative instructional manner

The Partnership for 21st Century Skills (P21) was founded in 2002 as a coalition bringing together the business community, education leaders, and policymakers to position 21st century readiness at the center of US K-12 education and to kick-start a national conversation on the importance of 21st century skills for all students. How often do you use these skills daily in your job & life? 21 st Century Skills Creativity Communication Collaboration Critical Thinking “Soft” Skills

Defining STEM STEM education is NOT: – more math and more science. – teaching math or science simply through an electronic format. Successful STEM education address the need for: – increased teacher content knowledge – enhanced models of integration and application

Engineering Design Process Investigate PlanDesignCreateEvaluate Problem

Defining STEAM STEAM is the integration of science, technology, and/or math infused with meaningful integration of the arts to design a solution to a problem. STEAM is the purposeful and intentional use of the arts as a vehicle for demonstrating understanding of science and/or math standards being taught in the classroom.

True STEAM learning happens when… arts standards are infused into STEM instruction arts modalities are used to interpret, present and share STEM work the arts are a valid assessment tool for STEM learning

True STEAM or Arts Enhancement? “We did a STEAM activity in class today! I used the arts by having my students paint the bird houses we bought for the outdoor habitat challenge.” “We did a STEAM activity today! We created a video PSA on water conservation. Students took on roles based on theatre careers (playwright, director, technician, etc.) and it was a successful collaboration!” “We did a STEAM activity today! We sang a song about fractions and moved our bodies.”
