Course Objectives  Designed to introduce students to the scope and practice of professional engineering and the role it plays in today's society.  Emphasis is placed on developing a range of technical, information literacy and report writing skills and innovative thinking to find solutions to social needs within a sustainable framework.  Teamwork and project management skills are also developed, and applied in a group design project University of Newcastle. (2007). GENG1803 Course Outline First Year Engineering Course

 Development of information literacy and academic integrity skills have been a component of the subject for a number of years. oInformation Literacy component worth 10% of overall course mark.  With a variety of approaches and assessment tasks supported by library workshops, learning materials delivered via Blackboard, and online discussions. Issues  Information literacy sessions and related assessment task placed emphasis on lower order thinking and information seeking behaviours, rather than information using behaviours.  Assessment task disjointed from other course assessment items.  Need for greater focus on principles related to academic integrity. Information Literacy component prior to 2005

From 2005  Shift in University focus on academic integrity  “Embedding Information Literacy Project”  New Course Coordinator Information Literacy and Academic Integrity

A new approach … Principles of information literacy, academic writing and integrity embedded across lectures, tutorials and assessment tasks. With assessment tasks including: Information Literacy Quiz EndNote Annotated Bibliography Final Project Report Topic Review

Libraries are seen as the main providers of support for bibliographic software within their institutions. 3. Bibliographic Software and Undergraduates _______________________________________ 3. East, J. (2001) Academic libraries and the provision of support for users of personal bibliographic software: a survey of Australian experience with EndNote. LASIE 32: “… we have to ask ourselves whether undergraduates really need software for referencing. Perhaps they would learn the principles of referencing more effectively if they had to format the references manually? Most currently do so.” 4. Support and encouragement across Faculties within the University of Newcastle to incorporate EndNote use into undergraduate student’s strategy for good practice in academic integrity and referencing. Others experiences with integration into undergraduate coursework: St Olaf College in Minnesota - Biology Course 5. and Political Sciences Course East, J. (2005). Comparison of Refworks and EndNote. 9 Learning Objectives 1.Identify and locate different sources of information for your project using library and other resources. 2.Apply a framework and process to critique sources. 3.Use EndNote to capture citation data for references. 4.Produce an annotated bibliography. ANZIL Standards Recognises the need for information and determines the nature and extent of the information needed. Finds needed information effectively and efficiently. Critically evaluates information and the information seeking process. Manages information collected or generated. Assignment A3 – EndNote Annotated Bibliography
