CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE’S PLAN ‘MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN MEDWAY’ Sally Morris Assistant Director of Commissioning and Strategy NHS Medway/Medway Council

Commissioning Children’s Services Review – monitor and evaluate the services/support provided to ensure it is meeting the identified needs Plan – develop a plan of how needs will best be met Do - putting the plan into practice: improving the delivery of existing services, re-tendering to a new specification or initiating new services in place of old Understand –needs analysis

Our approach to planning ECM Needs Assessment Evidence of what works – nationally & locally Focused on outcomes and impact Involving children and families Clear governance – revised CT structure Regular monitoring and management action

Priorities for Action PARENTING & FAMILY SUPPORT Make sure babies get the best start in life - helping mothers to have good physical and emotional /mental health in pregnancy and the early months of the child’s life. Reduce the harm and pressure caused to families when they live in temporary or poor accommodation Help the most vulnerable families to improve the parenting they give their children from birth to age 5 Help very young children to be ready to start school and ready to learn.

Priorities for Action 21 ST CENTURY SCHOOLS Improve children’s experience of transition from one phase to another- for example moving from nursery to reception class; from primary school to secondary and from secondary school to college, university or work. Raise the aspirations and expectations of all children, families, teachers; schools and communities in Medway Reduce the amount and impact of bullying

Priorities for Action YOUTH MATTERS Celebrate the achievement of children and young people and the contribution that they make to Medway. Encourage more of them to give their time and energy to making Medway a good place to live and learn. Increase the range and number of Apprenticeships available to young people Increase the number of young people who are in education, training or work after they leave school

Priorities for Action VULNERABLE CHILDREN Ensure the needs of LAC, BME, Young Carers and other socially excluded groups are addressed across the activities of the CT partnership Improve the independence, support and opportunities available to disabled children and their families in all settings – home, school, leisure and work Reduce the number of children and young people who go missing from home or from care and the number who are missing school

Priorities for Action HEALTH AND WELL BEING Help children and young people to have good mental health Help children to maintain a healthy physical weight Find out more about the amount of drug and alcohol use amongst children and young people and work together to reduce this

Priorities for Action STAYING SAFE Protect children and young people from the harm that domestic and relationship violence can cause them Evidence the impact or early prevention services in safeguarding children and appropriately diverting them from statutory provision Implement the findings of the Munro Review on safeguarding children 2011

Priorities for Action ENABLERS SUPPORTING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE CYPP Make sure that teams of professionals work well together to identify and meet the needs of vulnerable children and young people Make sure children and young people and their parents/carers have a chance to give their views and ensure that professionals listen Implement effective processes, systems, governance workforce changes/development to support the implementation of the plan
