BSc Nursing Pebble Pad Project

Why Change? By moving to electronic portfolios we want to: Make the portfolio secure and deal with the risks of both loss and unauthorised access Enable faster and more in-depth interaction between students, mentors and personal supervisors Give our students a platform to develop as better reflective learners Give our students a portfolio which they can take with them after graduating and use for further professional development

Support at a Distance

Pilot Project Started October 2012 Two Co-operative Learning groups This pilot involved; 39 students, 37 mentors 12 link lecturers.

Pilot Evaluation This included face to face with students and personal supervisors/link lecturers and survey monkey and telephone interviews with practice staff. Universal issues Workflow problems IT access But, overall evaluations suggest the e-portfolio is on a very sound footing and has established a strong base from which to grow and expand

Which Students and When? The e-portfolio will be rolled out over a single academic year starting from October Introducing e-portfolios to all BSc Nursing cohorts in a single year still gives us a partially staggered rollout with Oct11 and Oct12 students starting practice in October and Sep13 students in January. This e-portfolio rollout requires some considerable planning as full implementation includes an increase in numbers to approximately; 600 students 45 link lecturers/personal supervisors 2500 mentors

Future? The intention is to develop the Mentor Preparation Programme portfolio as an e-portfolio as it seems logical that those who support the pre-registration students should have a similar experience. This will have also have the consequence of disseminating information about the e-portfolio and increasing mentors’ ability to engage with the system.
