Historical Background Samuel named as the primary author –Samuel was the 13 th (or 15 th ) judge of Israel –Nathan of Gad wrote about David’s life (1 Chron 29:29) –Abiathar, high priest, may have wrote later chapters Existed as one book until translated into Greek around B.C. Written between 931 B.C. and 722 B.C. and covered the period from B.C. or 130 years Imperialistic void –Hittite and Egyptian empires had fallen more than a century earlier –Smaller kingdoms like the Ugarit had disintegrated as well

II Samuel 2:8-4:12 In Brief War erupts –Between of house of David and Saul –Ish-Bosheth, Saul’s son, declared king of Israel –Abner, Saul’s nephew, was Israel’s military commander –Joab, David’s commander, defeats Abner at Gibeon Abner transfers allegiance to David –Because of Ish-Bosheth’s accusations –Abner pledges to persuade the rest of the tribes of Israel to transfer their allegiance as well –Joab later stabs and kills Abner –Two if Ish-Bosheth’s officers stab and behead him –David treats them as murderers

David is Anointed King over Israel (5:1-5) Tribes of Israel meet with David –To make David their king, why? He was an Israelite (5:1) David had led the nation against its enemies (5:2, I Samuel 18:5, 18:13) Leaders acknowledged that God had chosen David (5:2, 1 Samuel 13:13,14) David makes a covenant with the tribal elders –Both acknowledged the sovereign hand of God in the matter (5:3) –Tribal elders anoint David as king (5:3) –Third anointing ceremony for David David reigns over Israel and Judah 40 years (5:4-5)

David Conquers Jerusalem (5:6-16) David leads his army in an attack of Jerusalem –Occupied by the Jebusites (5:6, and Judges 1:8,21, ch 18) –Jebusites felt invincible –David and his men enter through a water shaft (5:7) Jerusalem as a David’s capitol –Bordered Judah and Benjamin – politically neutral –Easily defended –Center of Canaan Israel grows stronger with David as king (5:9) –God allows David to become a great ruler (5:10) –King of Tyre seeks an alliance (5:11) –David takes more wives, has 11 children (5:14-16)

David Defeats the Philistines (5:17-25) Philistines assemble a large force to attack Israel –Most like before he defeated Jerusalem –David travels to a stronghold for refuge (5:17) –Philistines attack in the Valley of Rephaim (5:18) David seeks God’s help –David asks God if he should attack –God tells David to attack, would enable victory (5:19) –David defeats the Philistines, burns Philistine idols (5:21) Philistines attack Valley of Rephaim again –David consults with God again –God sends out angelic forces to fight (5:23-24) –David routs the Philistines, chases to Gezer (5:25)

II Samuel 6 In Brief David brings the Ark back to Jerusalem –To unite the religious and political life of the nation –During its movement, God struck down Uzzah when trying to steady the Ark David places the Ark in the house of Obed-Edom –For three months David then brings the Ark to Jerusalem –Enters the city without incident –David celebrates –Sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings Michal’s private criticism of David’s joy –Remains childless for her criticism
