Joshua enters Canaan From Shittim in the Plains of Moab, Joshua sent spies ahead to Jericho before crossing the Jordan and establishing a camp at Gilgal. Jericho was a strategic oasis located near an important ford of the Jordan River. Three routes led from Jericho up into the central highlands. If Jericho could be taken, the way into the mountains of Canaan lay open.

Joshua’s Central and Southern Campaigns

Joshua’s Northern Campaign

Limits of Israelite settlement and the land yet to be conquered

Land of the Twelve Tribes of Israel Note #1: Levi did not receive land; instead, they were the priests and were given 48 cities throughout the land Note #2: Dan was originally granted land in the central coastlands. They were soon driven out, and created a new land around the northern city of Laish, which they renamed Dan.

Judges Chart on the Judges of Israel

Judges

The Beginning of the End of the Period of the Judges Judge/Priest = Eli Both Eli and the Ark of the Covenant are at Shiloh Philistines defeated Israel in first battle Israelites brought Ark to second battle; lost both battle and Ark

The Beginning of the End of the Period of the Judges Philistines brought the Ark of the Covenant to one city after another, as the inhabitants of these cities were afflicted with tumors; eventually they returned the Ark to Kiriath-jearim in Israel Samuel ruled as judge over Israel. He defeated the Philistines. Later, when he grew old, and his sons became corrupt in judging Israel, the Israelites demanded a “king to judge us like all the nations.” God allowed them to have a king, even though this meant “they have rejected me from being king over them.”

Saul So Samuel anointed Saul as king over Israel. Saul was a wealthy, handsome, tall man from the tribe of Benjamin.

Saul won victories over Moab, Edom, Ammon, the Arameans and the Amalekites, but could never achieve a decisive victory over the Philistines.

Saul and David He angered God by taking over the role of priest by making a sacrifice at Gilgal and when he kept spoils of war taken from the Amalekites in defiance of God’s command to destroy everything. In response, God ordered Samuel to anoint David (a teenager at the time) as the future king of Israel. Soon afterwards, David succeeded in killing Goliath, which resulted in a victory over the Philistines and David being made the general of the Israelite army.

Saul and David Saul eventually became jealous of David’s success, while at the same time being possessed by “a harmful spirit,” and tried to kill David. David fled Saul’s camp (with the help of Jonathan, the son of Saul, and next-in- line for the throne). This begins eight years of David hiding from Saul.

The L ORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures

He leads me beside still waters

He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake

Wadi Qilt flash flood with waterfall Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me;

Wadi Qilt flash flood waterfall

Wadi Qilt flash flood in Jericho

your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;

you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the L ORD forever.
