Presentation transcript:

2 Samuel 5:1-2 All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, 'When Saul was our king in the past, you were the real military leader of Israel.'

Then King David made a covenant with the elders of Israel at Hebron, and they anointed David king over Israel.

David was 30 years old when he became king and he reigned for 40 years, 7 in Hebron and 33 in Jerusalem.

The Philistines heard that David had been anointed king of all Israel

And the Philistines marched out to confront him.

So David asked God, 'Should I set out to attack the Philistines?' And Yahweh said, 'Set out and attack!'

So they set out and defeated them.

And David said, 'Through my hand, God has burst forth against his enemies as water bursts forth.' That is why that place is known as Baal of Outbursts.

The Philistines abandoned their idols there, and David ordered that they be burned.

Again the Philistines raided the valley.

So again David asked Yahweh, and this time Yahweh said to him, 'Don't march straight against them, but circle around behind them and come up the rear.'

David did just as Yahweh commanded him.

And he struck down the Philistines from Gibeon all the way to Gezer.

David gathered 30,000 select men from Israel, and they traveled with him to Baalah in Judah to retrieve the ark of God.

The ark bears the name of Yahweh Sabaoth, who sits enthroned between the cherubim. They loaded it onto a new cart.

And they carried it from the house of Abinadab on the hill. Abinadab's sons Uzzah and Ahio were guiding the cart.

And David and all Israel were enthusiastically celebrating, singing, and playing zithers, tambourines, rattles, and cymbals

When they came to the threshing floor at Nacon, the oxen stumbled, so Uzzah reached out and steadied the ark of God.

The anger of Yahweh blazed against Uzzah, and he killed him for having touched the ark.

David was angry because Yahweh attacked Uzzah, and he called that place Outburst Against Uzzah. And that remains its name to this day.

So David did not move the ark to the City of David. He left it at the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite.

The ark of Yahweh stayed in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and David was told, 'Yahweh has blessed the family of Obed-Edom and everything he owns because of the ark of God.'

So David was happy to bring the ark from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David. The men carrying the ark had taken six steps when David sacrificed an ox and a fat calf.

All Israel was shouting and blowing trumpets, and David danced enthusiastically before Yahweh.
