Earthquakes!! Travis Osborne Ms. Anderson

When do Earthquakes occur? Earthquakes occur when their is a release of huge amounts of energy in the crust which is beneath the Earth. These energy waves are called seismic waves. Earthquakes are also the main cause to there disasters like volcanoes, tsunamis, floods, etc. As you probably know, earthquakes can cause alot of damage like the nasty disasters they are. They are known to destroy a lot of structures and landscapes. Well here is something you might now know: Earthquakes can cause damage depending on the amount of energy released from the crust. If only a little bit of energy is released then there might not be much damage but if there's alot of energy waves released then it can cause major damage to our cities. the scariest thing about an earthquake is that their unexpected. So we must stay prepared for them at all times

What is and Earthquake? An earthquake is a shaking of the ground caused by the sudden breaking and movement of large sections called tectonic plates of the earth's rocky outermost crust.

What Is a Fault? A fault is the break in the rocks that make up the Earths crust San Andreas Fault! San Andreas Fault near Gorman, California. The grey, metamorphic quartz monzonite on the left side of the fault are rocks of the Pacific Plate and the brown sandstone and siltstone on the right of the fault are rocks of the

Epicenter The Epicenter is the point on the surface nearest the earthquake!

Focus Focus is the point of orgin of an Earthquake!! This is also the point beneath Earth’s surface where rock breaks under stress and causes the earthquake!

What can be Triggered by a Earthquake? Tsunamis Landslides

Where do most Earthquakes occur? Most earthquakes occur along the edge of the oceanic and continental plates. The earth's crust (the outer layer of the planet) is made up of several pieces, called plates. The plates under the oceans are called oceanic plates and the rest are continental plates. The plates are moved around by the motion of a deeper part of the earth (the mantle) that lies underneath the crust. These plates are always bumping into each other, pulling away from each other, or past each other. The plates usually move at about the same speed that your fingernails grow. Earthquakes usually occur where two plates are running into each other or sliding past each other.

During and Earthquake? Make sure you are under something big! Go get in a Cellar Stay away from windows! Make sure you cover your head!

After and Earthquake! Stay away from damaged areas! Use the telephone only for emergency calls! Help injured or trapped people! Open cabinets cautiously.
