ATLAS Endcap Muon System WBS 3.5 Frank Taylor MIT M&O Request FY06 Toronto August 3, 2005 V1.1

F. E. Taylor - ATLAS Muon System Toronto 3-Aug-05, U.S. Muon Schedule V7.03 Sequence: EIL4-13 EIL4-A&C BW-C SW-A SW-C BW-A

F. E. Taylor - ATLAS Muon System Toronto 3-Aug-05, Status-I 30-July-05  MDT Chambers – EIL4+SW+BW complete  Phase I Commissioning of all 240 CERN complete complete  All on-chamber electronics complete  Available personnel have largely moved to CERN  CSC Chambers – SW  14 of 32 passed Phase I BNL complete  All on-chamber electronics complete  Off-chamber RoD & Transition Modules in prototype  Will not be finished by CD4A but will be ready for installation  Alignment – EIL4+SW+BW+EO complete  All in-plane components complete complete  All components for alignment bars complete  Expect EIL4/BW/SW parts complete by CD4A  Except – CSC on-chamber parts (not part of Appendix 3)  EO parts will be completed before V7.03 need date

F. E. Taylor - ATLAS Muon System Toronto 3-Aug-05, Status-II 30-July-05 -Ready  Chamber installation tooling-Ready TIS certified  Chamber ‘Verticalizer’, ‘Grabber’ & ‘Wisconsin’ tool TIS certified -Started  BW Installation B180-Started  Last BT moved from B180 to Point 1 on 29-July-05  Competition for space reduced but share B180 with TGC & ECT  BW-Large Sector tooling setup in B180  BW-Sector 9C vertical  BW-Small Sector tooling delivered to CERN  Except A-frame that will be needed later  Remaining BW sector parts delivery Aug. through Nov. from Russia  Project tracking difficult -Started  EIL4 Installation B180-Started  Work area setup in B180 and is operational  EIL4-13A installed on frame & integrated with TGCs in B180  SW Installation B191-To Start early 2006 after ECT Assembly  SWA & SWC are at CERN  Were pre-assembled at Hatehof in Israel

F. E. Taylor - ATLAS Muon System Toronto 3-Aug-05, M&O-Installation Locations & Phases MDT Test Station BMC, UM, UW CERN - Bld 184 CSC Test Station BNL Alignment System Test Station CERN - Bld 180 Commission Big Wheel [BW] Sectors CERN - Bld 180, 185 Commission Small Wheel [SW] CERN - Bld 191 Phase II CY Phase I CY Phase III CY ATLAS UX15 Beam On - CY-07 Installation on Support Structures Complete Partially Complete Started B184 CERN

F. E. Taylor - ATLAS Muon System Toronto 3-Aug-05, Installation Pictures Chamber Handling Tooling Installation of 1 st Alignment Bar in Sector 9C BW-L Tooling & Sector 9C EIL4 Work Area in B180 EIL4 A13 TGC+MDT BW Sector B180 Hatehof

F. E. Taylor - ATLAS Muon System Toronto 3-Aug-05, Plans for FY06  MDT Chambers  Production installation of EIL4 chambers (Operation 1)  16 chambers – 4 are special in Sectors 1 & 9  All 16 installed in UX15 by 15-March-06  Production installation of BW-L & BW-S chambers (Operations 2&3)  16 BW-C Sectors (5 MDT each) by 30-Jan-06  Continue BW-A Sectors finish by Dec-06  Set up SW area in B191 – start by 15-Jan-06  Production installation of EI MDTs on SWs (Operations 4&5)  All EI MDTs (64) installed by ~ Oct-06 (Start ASAP – dependent on ECTs)  CSC Chambers  Ship all CSCs to CERN after Phase I BNL ~ Oct-05  Setup CSC test area in B184 ~ Nov-Dec-05  Integrate CSCs with support frames & alignment components  Installation of CSCs in SWs (Operations 4’&5’)  Finish by Oct-06

F. E. Taylor - ATLAS Muon System Toronto 3-Aug-05, US Muon Operations in B180 BW-S (O3) EIL4 (O1) BW-L (O2) Small Wheel in B191 O(4&5)

F. E. Taylor - ATLAS Muon System Toronto 3-Aug-05, Budget Profile-Baseline Possible call on Management Reserve FY06,7,8 Phase II & III – Integration & Commissioning in UX15

F. E. Taylor - ATLAS Muon System Toronto 3-Aug-05, Labor Plans-Baseline

F. E. Taylor - ATLAS Muon System Toronto 3-Aug-05, Installation Baseline Some carryover expected FY05->FY06 but unknown at this time

F. E. Taylor - ATLAS Muon System Toronto 3-Aug-05, FY06 M&O Request  Solicited M&O requirements from the 10 Muon Institutes  Replies from all 10 received 1 st round of budget scrubbing of requests while trying to maintain essential technical staff support Sum I+M&O = 2,278 Sum M&O = 1,895

F. E. Taylor - ATLAS Muon System Toronto 3-Aug-05, M&O Resource Levels Analysis of Jan-05 still holds: Requirements for FY05, 06 & 07 estimated to be roughly same level FY05 M&O Budget 1,887k FY06 M&O Request after PM scrubbing 1,895k Installation in FY06 budget baseline 383k

F. E. Taylor - ATLAS Muon System Toronto 3-Aug-05, Management Reserve  Anticipate a call on MR ~ $354k in FY06  Scheduled work delayed but end-date fixed  BW and SW installations and commissioning will have significant overlap  Expect roughly constant M&O resources needed FY05-FY07.  During FY06 work will focus on EIL4 & BW and later on SW installation and commissioning in B180 & B191, respectively  Installation and commissioning of EIL4-A13 and 1 st BW-L sector should provide a calibration of time & manpower needed  Priority for call for MR funding  Essential technical & engineering CERN for installation & commissioning

F. E. Taylor - ATLAS Muon System Toronto 3-Aug-05, Summary  Many items completed on the CD4A list  However significant effort in the US remains until the end of FY05 that has impacted concentrated CERN  Delays BW Installation & Commissioning  B180 occupancy, delivery of BW frames & tooling  Because Installation in UX15 is fixed, more work will have to be performed in parallel  EIL4, BW and SW installation work will overlap in CY06  5 ‘Operations’ simultaneously conducted  Share manpower, share tooling, logistical overhead  M&O resources will have to support this compressed schedule
