BTEC Creative Media Production UNIT: 2 TASK 1

Learning Intentions To understand the principles of communicating ideas To know how to use effective communication of ideas

YOUR TASK Your task is to plan ideas for your film. You need to have a meeting in a group of people where you communicate your ideas. You need to focus on the following:

CLARITY OF VOICE This relates to the way in which you pitch your voice in order to be heard. If you are too quiet and unassertive in the way that you speak, then others are unlikely to hear what you have to say. If you talk too loudly, you may come across as domineering or even aggressive. This may put peoples backs up and cause them to feel hostile towards your point of view.

TONE OF VOICE Tone of voice is different to clarity of voice in that it relates more to the intonation that you use when you speak. We all know that people will be more receptive to somebody who speaks in a reasonable, calm manner than to someone who is slightly sarcastic or who is talking down to us and making us feel belittled or stupid. Be sure to consider your audience and the way that you want them to respond to your point of view.

CLARITY OF EXPRESSION It is difficult to follow someone if they keep saying ‘um or ‘er and never really get to the point; these habits can cause the listener to become board or uninterested in what you are saying. Your listeners could switch off and stop listening and then you have failed to communicate to them effectively. Common words and sentences such as ‘like’ or ‘ do you know what I mean?’ should also be avoided, as they give the impression that the speaker: Does not have a well rounded argument Is not sure of their point Is almost willing someone to understand them

TECHNICAL LANGUAGE/ VOCABULARY Technical language is extremely relevant to production work. When talking about what you will be creating it is important you use correct technical language. See the sheet of technical language to help with this

ASKING QUESTIONS It is important that when communicating with your group that you think before the meeting what questions you are going to ask your fellow peers. A good question should be open where you can get a good response to. Not just a yes no answer but an actual sentence that can form a discussion. EG: I was thinking of a film based on a action adventure genre what do you think?

TURN TAKING You should consider the ideas of others throughout all discussions and make the speaker feel comfortable by being attentive, and respecting their turn to speak. It is important that you let others in your group ask questions and all talk and have their views.

respecting others’ views When someone is speaking, don’t turn away from them or start chatting to the person next to you, and avoid the temptation to interrupt them or talk over them. Make sure you are listening to other peoples comments

NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION This is your body language and facial expressions. When listening make sure your sitting in a position that represents listing and interested. If you slump back and look board your non verbal communication will not look good. When talking sit up straight and be confident.
