Presentation transcript:

What do American’s think of us? The British drive on the wrong side of the road.

They don’t – they drive on the left. So do Australia, Japan, Thailand, South Africa, Kenya, Pakistan, India and Tanzania, among many other countries. That’s close to half the drivers in the world

Fish and chips is Britain’s favourite meal.

Nope: it’s curry

British means English.

Britain – the UK, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland – comprises England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Do NOT tell a Welshman you love his English accent. Do not go to the international terminal for a flight from Glasgow to London.

All English people are posh

For some reason most Americans view English people as upper-class aristocratic types that lounge about in their country homes, playing the odd game of cricket and rugby. Although there are a small contingency of these people, most people are just normal and there are areas of real poverty – did you know 1 in every 14 children are classed as living in poverty in Brampton?

All Brits are intelligent

For some reason every British person on American television and in films seems to be portrayed as highly educated, if you saw the unused school libraries and the young people on the streets you might think otherwise. The fact that a lot of Brits are shown wearing spectacles is just because they generally make people look more academic.

We all live in London We all live in London

A lot of Americans are confused by Northerners from the UK, mistaking them as Scottish or Irish or maybe even from somewhere else in Europe. There are many more accents than the stereotypical upperclass Brit ( 'well hello there, fancy a spot of cricket?') and cockney ('ello guvnor'), some of the strongest regional accents are Scouse (Liverpool), Brummie (Birmingham) and Geordie (Newcastle)

Ethnicity and Religion. What our misconceptions about other countries? Think of any country – how do you feel about that country? What do you like/dislike about it? What has influenced our misconceptions? Where do our opinions come from?
