Expanding InTBIR Membership National Neurotrauma Society June 28-29, 2014 San Francisco Dr. Elizabeth Theriault Assistant Scientific Director, CIHR-INMHA

Global effort supported and led by research agencies / state departments Launched in October 2011 in Brussels Founding Members: EU: European Commission US: National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Canada: The Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Institute of Neurosciences, Mental Health and Addiction (CIHR-INMHA) Open/keen to new membership

Goal To coordinate clinical research activities across the full spectrum of TBI injuries with the long-term goal to improve clinical outcomes and lessen the global burden of TBI by How to achieve it ? Through the discovery of causal relationships between treatments and clinically meaningful outcomes.

 Create an international TBI research network by establishing infrastructure and guidelines for data sharing and collaboration;  Further establish and promote the use of the TBI Common Data Elements as harmonised, international standards for TBI clinical data collection;  Develop and apply sophisticated analytical tools to enable CER for TBI treatments, as well as for diagnostic tools and outcome measures;  Organize project review meetings to discuss opportunities and challenges. Specific Objectives:

InTBIR Governance:

Marie-Noelle CASTEL (Sanofi-Aventis) Graham TEASDALE (Emeritus, U. Glasgow) Carl KESSELMAN (U. Southern California) Michael WEINER (UCSF) Ravi MENON (Western U, Ontario) Sam WEISS (Hotchkiss Brain Institute, University of Calgary)

How InTBIR works: USEUCanada Funded projects work closely together Identify common strategic goals Agree to share tasks (and costs) Issuing of funding calls in the cooperating country(ies) Independent evaluation, selection and funding of projects Results, data and standards are being shared 2 projects 5 projects

InTBIR Growth - Looking ahead:  Like all enterprises, there is probably a scale and scope that would be optimal for achieving InTBIR’s mission. Is there an upper and lower limit to membership that fits within this scale and scope?  “It’s all about the people”. What sort of commitment might be helpful to ensure that the members remain actively engaged participants and stakeholders?  Would full and partial memberships be advantageous? What might these look like in terms of governance?
