Introduction to Chapter 3 Ilaria DiMatteo UNSD 6 th Oslo Group Meeting 2-5 May 2011

Chapter 3 – Classification This chapter will provide a review of the relevant classification in energy statistics, i.e. Standard International Energy Product Classification (SIEC)Standard International Energy Product Classification (SIEC) Classification of economic activities for the energy industries and energy consumersClassification of economic activities for the energy industries and energy consumers Classification of energy resourcesClassification of energy resources

SIEC sections 0 Coal 1 Peat and peat products 2 Oil shale/oil sand 3 Natural gas 4 Oil 5 Biofuels 6 Waste 7 Electricity 8 Heat 9 Nuclear fuels and other fuels n.e.c.

Energy industries

Energy consumers

Classification of energy resources EA.11 Mineral and energy resources EA.111 Petroleum resources EA.112 Non-metallic minerals and solid fossil energy resources EA.113 Metallic minerals

Even though SIEC is a newly developed classification (based on internationally agreed definitions of energy products), there is not much experience in the use of SIEC as such (e.g. structure and coding system) The chapter could still presents country examples in the use of the classifications above and present how they overcame issues with them (if any)

Thank you!
