Better Memory: Male or Female?
Presentation transcript:

Who has better digit memory, males or females?

The purpose of my investigation is to determine if males or females have better digit memory. I think this is important to know because if I wanted to remember an important number that I forgot, I would know who to ask- a male or a female.

I hypothesize that the average male has better digit memory than females. I believe this because more males are in mathematic fields. So I believe more males will memorize the digits.

20 copies of the list Timer 10 males,10 females Data chart

Manipulated - Males or Females Responding - Number of Digits Recalled Constants - Number of Males and Females, Numbers on List, Same Amount of Time, 2 Males 2 Females, Per Trial, Same Procedure.

1. Gather materials 2. Create a list of twenty 3 - digit numbers. 3. Make 20 copies of the list. 4. Give 1 copy to a female tester, face – down. 5. Set the timer for 1 minute, instruct tester to flip paper over. 6. Give the tester 1 minute to memorize the digits. 7. After the 1 minute is over, instruct tester to flip over the paper. 8. Ask the, tester to write down as many numbers as possible in 30 seconds. 9. Repeat steps with 1 more female and 2 males 10. Repeat steps 4 – 9 for 4 more trials. 11. Calculate the Average number of digits recalled for. 12. Calculate the number of digits recalled for males.

AVERAGE NUMBER OF DIGITS RECALLED TRIAL 1TRIAL 2TRIAL 3TRIAL 4TRIAL 5AVERAGE MALE FEMALE

My hypothesis was incorrect. Females have a better digit memory than males. The average of digits recalled for males is 2.7. The average of digits recalled for females is 2.8. Now that I know that females are better at remembering 3- digit numbers, I would like to try lower digit numbers and see if males are better at remembering low digit numbers.
