Presented by Dr. Jack E. Johnson at the 2007 NBEA Annual Convention Thursday, April 5, GDP, Distance Learning, & Word 2007 “Perfect Partners in Education”

At the heart of Word’s new revision is the “Ribbon.” The Ribbon is the focal point for all word processing commands. It replaces the menus and command bars of previous versions of Office. 2 GDP, Distance Learning, & Word 2007 “Perfect Partners in Education”

The three parts of the Ribbon are: 1.Tabs 2.Groups 3.Commands 3 GDP, Distance Learning, & Word 2007 “Perfect Partners in Education”

There are seven basic Tabs across the top of the Ribbon. Each represents a specific activity area. Each Tab has several Groups that show related items together, such as these Groups under the Home Tab: A Command is a button, a box, or a menu that carries out specific functions, such as these Commands under the Home Tab: 4 GDP, Distance Learning, & Word 2007 “Perfect Partners in Education”

The Dialog Box Launcher is a feature that expands a Group command to view the specific features of the Group. 5 GDP, Distance Learning, & Word 2007 “Perfect Partners in Education”

The Ribbon can be temporarily hidden if you want more screen space. To hide the Ribbon, double-click any of the Tabs—to expand it to its original size, click any Tab again. Displayed Ribbon Hidden Ribbon 6 GDP, Distance Learning, & Word 2007 “Perfect Partners in Education”

Key Tip Badges can be used to access any command in the Ribbon. To display the key tips, press the Alt key. The first key tips that are displayed repre- sent shortcuts for the Tab keys. Then, by pressing one of the Tab letters, the commands under that Tab are displayed with key tips. 7 GDP, Distance Learning, & Word 2007 “Perfect Partners in Education” The Key Tip Badges are turned off by again pressing the Alt key.

Additional tabs appear in the Ribbon when you edit clip art or pictures. Note the following: 1.A picture is selected. 2.A Picture Tools tab appears in the Ribbon. 3.Picture Style options and other commands appear in the Ribbon to adjust or alter the picture. 8 GDP, Distance Learning, & Word 2007 “Perfect Partners in Education”

The Quick Access Toolbar is an area where you can place your favorite commands. The toolbar can be customized to add or delete any command in Word. 9 GDP, Distance Learning, & Word 2007 “Perfect Partners in Education”

When you select text and point at it, a Mini toolbar will appear. From this toolbar, you can make numerous changes to the appearance of the text. 10 GDP, Distance Learning, & Word 2007 “Perfect Partners in Education”

Word 2007 provides users with an “on-the-fly” look at formatting changes you make. For example, if you want to change the font in a report heading, you can “try out” a font to see how it will look in the document before actually selecting it. 11 GDP, Distance Learning, & Word 2007 “Perfect Partners in Education”

A Zoom Slider has been added to the Word screen. It is located at the bottom right of the Word screen. With the Zoom Slider, you can move the pointer to the left for a reduced image and to the right for an enlarged image. Or, you can specify an exact zoom level by clicking 100% to open the Zoom dialog box. 12 GDP, Distance Learning, & Word 2007 “Perfect Partners in Education”

If you are a Word 2003 user and want to know where a command in that program is located in Word 2007, go to the following interactive site: b-4e b d7b18d0aa1&displaylang=en&tm 13 GDP, Distance Learning, & Word 2007 “Perfect Partners in Education”

Here are some examples of what the interactive Word 2007 program will show you: Open a File Add a Page No. Header/Footer Insert a File Spell Check 14 GDP, Distance Learning, & Word 2007 “Perfect Partners in Education”

Without controlling these settings, here’s what could happen GDP, Distance Learning, & Word 2007 “Perfect Partners in Education”

19 Here is a one-page letter, formatted nicely in Word 2003.

20 Here’s that same letter, formatted in Word 2007, using standard default settings.

The Impact of Word 2007 on Keyboarding To prevent formatting nightmares such as this, GDP will change the Word 2007 default settings as follows: Word 2007 SettingGDP Setting ► Word 2007 Style► Word 2003 Style ● Font: Calibri 11 pt. ● Font: Calibri 12 pt. ● Line spacing: Multiple ● Line spacing: Single ● Spacing after paragraphs: 10 pt. ● Spacing after paragraphs: 0 pt. ► Status Bar: No vertical page position► Status Bar: Vert.
