Albemarle County Overview Who We Are Today

The county population continues to grow at about 2% annually Albemarle’s population is aging 16% of the county’s population is non-white Population growth is fueled by in-migration Median income levels continue to increase Albemarle residents have a high level of educational attainment

Rural Protection

95% of the county’s 723 square miles is located in the rural area Over 9% of Albemarle’s acreage is permanently protected as conservation easements, parks & recreation areas More than 2000 buildings and structures and 400 archaeological sites have been identified as potential historic resources The county is developing a Rural Area component for the Comprehensive Plan

Attractive, Livable Urban Environments

Approximately 5%, or 35 square miles of the county, is in the urban sections of the county We are meeting the continued pressure of our transition from a predominantly rural to an urbanizing locality We are master planning our urban areas
