STEM support project in London Update Adrian Fenton STEM Partnership Manager for London

Reminder of aims: To help raise the number of young people in London studying STEM subjects at school and college To help ensure that these individuals have the relevant skills so that they can access opportunities in the modern economy To assist in addressing STEM-related employment needs of the capital To help ensure that the young people engaging in STEM subjects and following STEM-related careers reflect the diversity of our capital city.

Mapping STEM in London Carried out in Spring 07 Interviews carried out with: –9 Local Authority Advisers or Strategy Consultants; –7 representatives of largely Government funded organizations; –14 representatives of independent STEM organizations.

The main themes/recommendations from the mapping included: Facilitating communication, both formally and informally. This to be achieved in different ways including bringing together the STEM partners, spreading good practice (between schools and colleges) and maintaining the STEM portal. Addressing the need for STEM forums through a number of focused themed groups e.g. Senior Leadership teams.
