CIESE: Creating the Next Generation of Engineers and Innovators

CIESE Mission To motivate and support educators and students to pursue and succeed in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) study and careers through innovative, research-based instructional strategies and use of novel technologies.

CIESE Focus Engaging students in higher-order thinking, authentic problems, 21 st century skills through: Use of software in middle and high school mathematics Internet-based real time data in science and mathematics K-12 engineering curricula

Program and Capabilities Curriculum development Teacher professional development Education research (how students learn STEM) Student programs Research & Innovation in Engineering Education (faculty initiative)

Impact 19,000 K-12 educators (NJ, NY, AZ, OH, FL) International programs and collaborations; model for geographically-distributed programs ~9 million students 238 community college faculty at 41 institutions in 21 states 100,000 students from 35 countries annually participate in online projects

International Recognition

“Unique and Compelling” Internet-based real time data and global telecollaboration provides opportunities for students to engage in critical thinking, application of learning, use of 21 st century skills, in the context of authentic, real-world problems. Unique Cannot be done without Internet technologyCompelling Provides students with real world learning experiences

Use of Cyberinfrastructure for 21 st Century Learning Real time data (e.g., Earthquakes) Telecollaborative projects (e.g., International Boiling Point Project) Primary Source data (e.g., Historic Photos Google Earth) Student Publishing (e.g., Lab reports) 100,000 students use online projects

Examples… International Boiling Point Project Musical Plates

External Evaluations Harcourt Student Impact Study: “86% of classrooms showed noteworthy gains in science and mathematics learning objectives”

External Evaluations ETS Teacher Study:  -less time lecturing  -more comfortable with small group activities  -more cooperative learning  -better instruction for different learning styles  -better teacher of problem-solving skills  -better able to present complex materials
