WEB PROGRAMMING M&IS Overview: – A little Bit About me! – Introduction of Web Programming – Structure of building – Successes – Hardships – Concluding Presentation & Future in CIS. Shaiana Jones December 10 th, 2010

A Little Bit About ME! My name is Shaiana Jones and I am from Akron, Ohio. I am a Junior here at Kent State University- Main Campus and I double major in Accounting and Computer Information Systems (CIS). I am an active member in the Beta Alpha Psi Organization and was currently congratulated for becoming the BAP Membership Chair for the 2010 Spring Semester. I plan to be at Kent, at the most, for two more years, then journeying off into the “wonderful” world of the “real world” full of technology. With that being said, let the journey start here…

Introduction of Web Programming As a student throughout the year you register for classes twice. Once for the spring semester and the other for the fall. Last spring, I registered for (11882 MIS WEB PROGRAMMING Standard Letter KC TR 3:45 pm - 5:00 pm Business Administration Bldg Geoffrey Steinberg (P) Lecture Aug 30, 2010 Dec 12, 2010) this Web Programming course. Little did I know what was ahead of me at that time. I had no idea what this class was about or what it entailed but it sounded very interesting to me. The first day of class was instruction-based, syllabus and what was expected from the course from Dr. Steinberg. I had, had him before in Computer Apps. So I knew that he was a good teacher. I kept the course and began the work as most students would.

Structure of Building As the class progressed, the work wasn’t hard but it began to become time-consuming. Putting together coding that I knew nothing about was definitely a task that I had to achieve, and Quickly! The coding we focused on for the term was: XHTML, JavaScript, PHP, and PHP and MySQL. XHTML and JavaScript were not challenging at all to me. These codes were short, and to the point. An example of these two types of coding was a homework assignment we did early on in the semester.

Continued Structure… It began to become complicated when we started to work on PHP. Coding, code hygiene, and comments had to be very specific. We worked on PHP for a couple assignments then we were introduced to PHP and MySQL along with it. MySQL was not hard creating but tying it into PHP became a task. A homework assignment that we created using PHP and MySQL is one that I recently turned in last week.

Successes My successes came easy! XHMTL JavaScript These were easy coding that didn’t consist of a lot to think about. Commenting on this coding was easy as well and I wasn’t lost of confused about XHTML or Javascript. MySQL This was an easy database. You put the information you needed into it and that was that. It was simple but yet complex.

Hardships PHP PHP was the hardest code that I had to deal with this semester. At times I wanted to do this to my computer and pull my hair out because I could not figure out what was wrong with my code. I would sometimes just sit at my computer for hours and stare at each line of coding. I knew that I had to figure it out and get my work submitted. I was not going to turn in an incomplete assignment. So I knew that I had to do what I had to do and if it took me 7 hours or more to do so then I had to do it. PHP is definitely coding that you have to pay attention to with every detail in order for your result to work.

Concluding….Future… As I conclude, Web programming has been a great experience and a huge wake up call for me dealing with CIS as a major. I plan to take on more classes like this one in hopes to become one of the best CIS majors at Kent State University. Choosing CIS as a major was just as important to me than me choosing accounting. I knew that those two majors, hand in hand, will take me far if I learn what I need to know and take the opportunities given to me seriously such as this one today. Hopefully, this learning experience here at Kent and the resources available to me will throughout my college life will lead me to a bright and successful future. I would like to thank you all for listening in on what I have presented to you and hope that you see a great student and a future analyst, programmer, accountant, software developer, or any profession in CIS or accounting in me. Thank You!!
