Food Lodging General Safety Social Etiquette Additional Advice
Look for restaurants with clearly marked prices and menus. Make reservations. Keep your receipts.
Try to eat organics, or Green Food label. Wash fruits and veggies off first. Only buy seafood from reputable businesses. Stick to well known restaurants and markets. The food is better quality and is safer to eat. Avoid milk if possible. Try soy. Drink only bottled water. Bring medicine for diarrhea. If you drink alcohol, choose beer.
Choose a 4+ star hotel, they are safer. 4 stars in China = 2 stars in the U.S.A. Make sure that the doors and windows in your hotel room can be securely closed. Do not let strangers in your room.
Travel in groups. Tell people where you are going. 110 is the number for police. Be sure you have real money. Carry an address book with contacts and addresses in English and Chinese.
Shop lightly. Driving in China is more hazardous than in the U.S.A. Be cautious when crossing the street. Learn the traffic laws. Avoid strangers if possible. Keep track of your belongings. Learn how to spot fakes. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
Dress modestly. Learn how to bargain in Chinese. Gambling and drugs are illegal in China. Avoid trying to communicate with “known” hand gestures.
