Solar Energy By: Jorge Gonzalez, Pedro Ojeda, Michelle Cantu and Consuelo Gomez. 1 st block.

Cost Per Kilowatts. For every kilowatt per hour the cost is.14¢. It takes 17 years to pay the total cost of the inversion for an average house that expends 920 kWh/month. For an average house in Sharyland plantation uses 2,000 kWh/hr.

Solar system. Costs of materials: (batteries, solar panels, wiring, convertor) $12, years maintenance of the system: $2,000. Professional installation: $12,000. Total cost: $26,965.

Solar Panels. Made of crystalline silicon that is used for the microprocessor industry and of gallium arsenide which is used only for making the solar cells. Are not used only by regular people for day to day activities; they are also used in space for the solar projects.

Solar panels. Due to the high costs that are involved for building such a great solar panel they are not rentable for the everyday activities. Solar panels are expected to live 40 years..

Advantages. Solar energy does not require any fuel. Solar Energy is clean, renewable (unlike gas, oil and coal) and sustainable, helping to protect our environment. It does not pollute our air by releasing carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide or mercury into the atmosphere like many traditional forms of electrical generation does.

Advantages cont. It actively contributes to the decrease of harmful green house gas emissions. Solar Energy can be utilized to offset utility-supplied energy consumption. It does not only reduce your electricity bill, but will also continue to supply your home/ business with electricity in the event of a power outage.

Disadvantages. The initial cost is the main disadvantage of installing a solar energy system, largely because of the high cost of the semi- conducting materials used in building one. Solar panels require quite a large area for installation to achieve a good level of efficiency. The efficiency of the system also relies on the location of the sun, although this problem can be overcome with the installation of certain components.

Disadvantages cont. The production of solar energy is influenced by the presence of clouds or pollution in the air. Similarly, no solar energy will be produced during nighttime although a battery backup system and/or net metering will solve this problem.

Is it feasible? The solar energy system, is an excellent system if you can afford the whole thing up front. The high cost of the system and maintenance makes the solar power system almost impossible to afford by the majority of the people. Although in about 17 years, the inversion pays by itself.

Conclusion. When people think of solar energy, the same thing often happens. Some see it as something for the future, others see it as something that is here today. So which view of solar energy – for the future or for today – is correct? Probably a little of both. Solar energy will certainly play an important role in the future energy needs of our planet, but it’s also here today and ready for hundreds of uses in homes, businesses, and industry.
