Crawford Central School District Math and ELA PA Core Alignment Project Created by Cheryl Krachkowski

It’s Here!

Lead Learners were selected All elementary faculty were invited to participate as part of the team to align and evaluate the core resources. Committees Formed

The Task at Hand Math: Two afternoons and one full day Core resource is Common Core aligned. Beginning stages of implementing the resource. English Language Arts: Three full days Core resource is NOT Common Core aligned. Resources used with fidelity.

Why Core Standards? Core Standards were written with the end in mind: to prepare students for college and careers. MathELA 1.Regular practice with complex texts and their academic language 2.Reading, writing, and speaking grounded in evidence from texts, both literary and informational 3.Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction 1.Greater focus on fewer topics 2.Coherence: Linking topics and thinking across grades 3.Rigor: Pursue conceptual understanding, procedural skills and fluency, and application with equal intensity

Resources Curriculum Maps and Modules (Must be signed in to access.) PA Core Resources or State Resources District Resources With Links to State Resources On the “PA Core Standards page, select Math or ELA. The modules and spreadsheets are accessed with the modules link.

PA CORE CURRICULUM MAP Math Standards grouped into 5-7 modules of content per grade level ELA Standards grouped into 5-7 modules of content per grade level The state divided and groups the standards in to likely modules of instruction. While CCSD will not teach by modules, we have used it for as a framework of organizing the standards.

Translating the Standards 1. The modules were arranged into a spreadsheet to manipulate. 2. The CC Standards were translated into PA Core Standard numbers. Some standards had no match. This is the difference between CC and PA Core.

Types of Standards in the Modules Focus Standards Taught for Mastery Important Standards Spiral Instruction The spreadsheet outlines where the standards are met in the core resource.

Rigor Check Once the standard was located in the core resources, a rigor check was preformed with these questions. Math Are the processes, concepts, fluency, and applications taught for mastery? ELA Does the core resource support standards in a strong, moderate, or weak manner?

Not Done…It’s a Process!

Next Steps Personal Learning Communities Teachers:  Roll out alignment project to all teacher.  Evaluate gaps and support core resource.  Teach with integrity and support each other. District:  Support teachers as learners.  Purchase supplemental resources as needed and create a “warehouse” for gathered resources.  Provide opportunities for collaboration.

Current Math Needs  Core resource “Effective Implementation” training and exploration  An understanding of the two prongs of math: process and depth of rigor  Evaluate the sequence of instruction to optimize student success  Materials and resources for gaps

Current Reading Needs  Core resource exploration-What do we have that we can use better?  Continued conversations to come to a consensus on eligible content  Close Reading professional development  Writing professional development and support to develop rigor and writers that meet or exceed the writing samples writing samples  Materials and resources for gaps

There is no they. They are us.

The next step will not be completed before the beginning of the school year… I am concerned that my team won’t make changes to meet the needs from what we have learned. StoryTown's writing component showed the greatest gaps to the PACCS. The grade level teachers need to meet and discuss the areas of weakness that we discovered in StoryTown and work together to find other resource options for the district to investigate. Perhaps lesson folders with resources that fill the gaps can be created and shared. Will administrators be aware of each grade levels weak areas outlined in the documents created? I am more familiar with what the PA Core Standards ARE, but not necessarily what they mean or the expectations of each standard. Content within Storytown is spiraled but it lacks the depth…
