Proposed HND for Social Services Briefing Session March 2007

Changing Demands in Sector Factors such as workforce regulation, professionalisation increasing representation of users and carers in policy making Have contributed to an increased demand for better trained and qualified practitioners at all levels This is leading to leading to a rising tide which is raising expectations all round.

Changing Demands in Sector Ageing Workforce (Scotlands social care workforce older than average) Workforce analysis predicts as older workers leave they will be replaced by younger, more qualified workers Analysis of complexity and demands of the care task indicates more sophisticated and higher level training required (e.g. social work training now at Hon Degree, Early Year and Childcare centres led by staff qualified at degree level, SVQ3 relevelled at SCQF 7) Recruitment and Retention Issues – some evidence to suggest that staff whose training needs are not met more likely to leave. People want career paths and options.

Developments in Training and Learning Opportunities Handys Concept of Portfolio Building Continuous Professional Development Changing Patterns of Access – bringing the learning to the learner, online supported learning, Academic and Work Based routes – can be designed to complement and support each other
