(Modern Languages) for Work Purposes Jim Pryde Qualifications Development Specialist

(Modern Languages) for Work Purposes Developments Since April 2008 Units available at Access 3 and Intermediate 1 Centres across Scotland delivering in some of the languages Assessment Support Packs (ASPs) available at these levels Units at these levels offer progression

(Modern Languages) for Work Purposes: Intermediate 2 and Higher The Units are free-standing at all levels The duration of a free-standing Unit is notionally 40 hours Can be delivered stand-alone or used in conjunction with another Unit or a group of Units, across a range of subject areas Can be used to support courses devised in centres or as part of NQ Group Awards or NQ Progression Awards

(Modern Languages) for Work Purposes: Intermediate 2 and Higher Units are suitable for use in a wide range of vocational settings Not primarily about transactions Encourage learner to reflect on skills required for employability Articulate with the aims of Curriculum for Excellence

(Modern Languages) for Work Purposes: Intermediate 2 and Higher The Units offer horizontal progression: the study of another language at the same level Vertical progression in the same language offers a more sophisticated use and mix of skills There is an emphasis on the integration of skills for assessment and learning and teaching purposes

(Modern Languages) for Work Purposes: Intermediate 2 and Higher Assessment Support Packs (ASPs) The new Units will not contain NAB assessments SQA has developed an ASP for French, and a generic version, at both levels The ASPs provide exemplification of assessment and suggest assessment approaches Exemplification can be used for formative purposes in preparation for assessment

Assessment Support Pack (cont) ASPs can be accessed by SQA Co-ordinators at ASP exemplars can be adapted to suit the needs of particular candidate groups Centres are encouraged to produce/adapt assessments to suit the needs of particular candidate groups Exemplars based on a range of scenarios Exemplars also contain suggestions for integrated assessments

Verification Centres can request prior verification of adapted exemplars but this is not a requirement Centres will be selected for Postal Verification This will provide support and feedback to centres SQA will develop a bank of exemplar materials drawn from good practice for all languages Centres who contribute materials to this bank will be acknowledged

Assessment Requirements Intermediate 2 Higher At all levels integration of assessment is possible and encouraged

Intermediate 2 Outcome 1: Writing (job-related report/application) max 150 words Outcome 2: Speaking (job-related discussion/interview) max 3-4 mins Integration encouraged and exemplified in ASP (Writing providing framework for Speaking, or Speaking providing framework for Writing)

Higher Outcome 1: Writing (job-related report/application) words Outcome 2: Speaking (job-related presentation with follow-up discussion/interview) max 5 mins Integration encouraged and exemplified in ASP (Writing providing framework for Speaking, or Speaking providing framework for Writing)

Workshop Tasks: Look at Unit Specification for Int 2 and Higher Discuss approaches to assessment Focus on Higher ASP exemplification Opportunity to seek clarification
