Civil Rights Movement Nearly 1 million African Americans served their country in WWII. During the war, membership in the leading civil rights organization, the NAACP, went from 50,000 to 500,000. After WWII, African Americans returned home with a renewed sense of hope and possibility. They also became more motivated, organized, and assertive as a community. In 1945 and 1946, voter registration drives raised the number of African Americans who were registered to vote in the south to 12% in 1947, up from 2% in 1940, though they still faced the increasing threat of violence and murder for attempting to vote. President Truman’s decision to desegregate the military and the federal government also contributed to the sense of optimism. A series of legal victories in the late 1940s, led by the NAACP, also led to significant progress.
