OVERVIEW OF THE CIVIL WAR UNIT NOTES

ABRAHAM LINCOLN 16 TH PRESIDENT OF THE U.S. UNTIL HIS ASSASSINATION IN 1865 AFTER THE CONCLUSION OF THE CIVIL WAR

EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, as the nation approached its third year of bloody civil war. The proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."

13 TH AMENDMENT(FREEDOM) THIS AMENDMENT FREED ALL SLAVES WITHIN THE UNITED STATES.

14 TH AMENDMENT (CITIZENSHIP) ALL PEOPLE BORN OR NATURALIZED IN THE UNITED STATES WERE NOW CITIZENS. THIS GAVE SLAVES THE FULL RIGHTS AND PRIVLEDGES OF CITIZENSHIP.

15 TH AMENDMENT (MALE VOTE) THIS AMENDMENT GAVE ONLY AFRICAN- AMERICAN MALES THE RIGHT TO VOTE.

UNION FOUGHT TO REUNITE THE REPUBLIC DURING THE CIVIL WAR AGAINST THE CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS OF THE SOUTH. ( SHOW STUDENTS CIVIL WAR UNIFORMS)

CONFEDERACY STATES THAT SECEDED (formally withdrew) FROM THE UNION DUE TO ISSUES OVER STATES RIGHTS AND SLAVERY.

GETTYSBURG ADDRESS SPEECH DELIVERED BY PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN AFTER THE BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG DURING THE CIVIL WAR. STATED THAT EQUALITY WAS NEEDED TO PRESERVE THE UNION.

LINCOLN-DOUGLAS DEBATES DEBATE BETWEEN ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND STEPHEN DOUGLAS. DOUGLAS WANTED STATES TO DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT THEY SHOULD HAVE SLAVERY. LINCOLNSLAVERY LINCOLN SAID SLAVERY WENT AGAINST THE IDEALS OF AMERICA.

SECESSION THE ACT OF WITHDRAWING FROM AN ORGANIZATION, UNION, OR A POLITICAL ENTITY.

RECONSTRUCTION TIME PERIOD IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE CIVIL WAR. LASTED FROM PLAN TO REBUILD THE SOUTH AND CHANGE UNEQUAL LAWS AND PRACTICES.

CONSCRIPTION FORCED ENLISTMENT OF SERVICE TO A COUNTRY; USUALLY FORCED ENTRY INTO THE ARMED FORCES.

FREEDMEN’S BUREAU The Freedmen's Bureau Bill, which created the Freedmen's Bureau, was initiated by President Abraham Lincoln and was intended to last for one year after the end of the Civil War.
