SNM Update Michael M. Graham, PhD, MD

SNM/ACNP GR Plan 2 SNM ACNP GR Plan Enhanced the Government Relations Existing Plan for Developed a Government Relations Strategic Plan Drinker Biddle and Reath, LLC, a leading Lobbying Firm was hired to help initiate the plan. Key focal points of the plan includes; nuclear medicine research funding, CMS reimbursement, and FDA issues.

Public Relations Plan 3 SNM Public Relations Plan Porter Novelli, SNM ’ s Public Relations Firm, created a communication plan, “ Helping SNM Tell Its Story of Serving Humanity. ” The plan is designed to build awareness for SNM and molecular imaging among other medical professionals, the scientific community and, to the extent possible, mainstream media and the general public.

SNM Education Strategic Plan 4 Education Strategic Plan The SNM Committee on Education created an Education Strategic Plan to move SNM to the forefront of the fields educational needs. The plan includes; meeting the revised CE Mission & ACCME revised Criteria Accreditation, extending outreach to other groups and organizations, Raise awareness of importance and benefits of nuclear medicine/MI procedures, MOC Part IV business plan must interlink CE with MOC, expand CE offerings to pharmacists and scientists, Transition Online Lectures into other education activities as they expire, and Provide education activities based on practice guidelines.

PET Utilization Task Force 5 The PET Utilization Task Force was created by the PET Center of Excellence in November 2007 to develop a plan to address the recent decrease in PET/CT utilization. The task force is comprised of physicians, technologists, and industry representatives.

PET Utilization Task Force 6 Working Goals from PET Task Force Develop and distribute a survey related to current satisfaction level of the PET/CT services referring physicians are receiving and identify specific quality issues. Develop clinical practice guidelines to ensure appropriate utilization and proper performance of PET/CT. SNM will work with ASCO, ASTRO and NCCN, as well as other professional organizations to ensure the appropriate utilization of PET/CT in practice guidelines.

PET Utilization Task Force 7 Working Goals from PET Task Force cont. Identify the educational needs of physicians and technologists who perform and interpret PET/CT and develop a report template to standardize reporting and improve quality. Identify research priorities and develop standardized research methodology that will facilitate aggregation of data. Additionally, from the research gathered, SNM will identify individuals/sites for research support in high- priority areas.

2008 SNM Grants/Awards 8 SNM Grants/Awards In September the ERF agreed to fund $430,000 in Grants and Awards for Applications are due Friday, April 4, New Awards Include: – SNM Molecular Imaging Research Grants for Junior Medical Faculty – Postdoctoral Molecular Imaging Scholar Program – Predoctoral Molecular Imaging Scholar Program

SNMTS Grants/Awards 9 SNMTS Grants and Awards Program Highlights SNMTS awards went online on January 24, Applications are due Friday,May 30, New Awards Include: – SNMTS Bachelor’s Degree Completion Scholarship – SNMTS Advanced Practitioner Scholarships – SNMTS Clinical Advancement Scholarships

New Travel Awards SNM Travel Awards: – Thirty (30) $1,000 awards offered SNMTS Travel Awards: – Twenty-five (25) $1,500 awards offered SNMTS Student Travel Awards: – Twenty-five (25) $1,500 awards offered 10 Travel awards are provided to aid supporting the attendance of physicians/researchers/trainees, technologists, and NMT students to present their molecular imaging abstracts at SNM’s Annual Meeting in New Orleans.

SNM/Covidien Seed Grant - This grant will support basic and clinical scientists in the early stages of their careers, employed by academic and research-oriented organizations worldwide. - $25,000 is available for one scientist in The SNM/Covidien Seed Grant in Nuclear Medicine Research for 2008 is designed to assist researchers in conducting new and innovative pilot projects that have potential for future support from foundations, corporations, or government agencies.

NM-Siemens Award for Excellence in Practice-Based Research - This award recognizes an investigator for originality, scientific methodology, and practical applications. Abstracts must contain scientific examination on the economic value of practice- or evidence-based research in the field of nuclear medicine and molecular imaging and therapy. - Seven prizes will be awarded: 12 The purpose of the SNM-Siemens Award for Excellence in Practice- Based Research is to encourage interested authors to submit abstracts that demonstrate the economic value of molecular imaging including nuclear medicine in the daily patient management process and, ultimately, improved patient outcomes. - One first place award of $5, and a certificate - One second place award of $4, and a certificate - One third place award of $2, and a certificate - Four honorable mentions awarded $1, and complimentary registration for the 2009 SNM Annual Meeting in Toronto.
