What Happens If We Don’t Take Care Of Our Body Parts? How Can We Make Sure We Do?

SUNBURNS Caused by harmful rays from the sun called UV-rays Body’s natural defense is the pigment melanin which causes tans and freckles and skin tone Melanin can only do so much!!

PREVENTING SUNBURNS Wear sunscreen!!! –Put on 30 minutes before you go outside –Reapply every 2-3 hours –More if you’re sweating a lot or in the pool –Use SPF 15 or higher

TAKE HOME MESSAGE Most important thing to remember about the skin when going outside? –Wear sunscreen!!!

Dangers of NOT Washing Your Hands Germs build up on your hands from food, animals, and surfaces Spread through hand-to-hand contact, coughing or sneezing on someone

When Should We Wash Our Hands? Before eating After using the bathroom After touching animals or animal waste After blowing your nose After coughing or sneezing into your hands After getting cuts and scrapes repaired After playing outside

Proper Hand Washing

What is Lice? Lice are little animals, like ants, that live in hair. Every year you or your friends could get lice. If your friend has head lice you can catch them from sharing hats/brushes.

What to Expect? Itchy head White speckles

Examination The only way to find head lice is to search the hair and skin Comb your hair when it is wet to see if you have lice Your parents or doctor might need to check your hair

Cavities A hole that can grow bigger and deeper over time. Get them from: – Sugary foods – Sugary drinks – NOT brushing your teeth – NOT going to the dentist

Your Teeth Should start losing some of your primary teeth by school age It is important to see your dentist once your secondary teeth come in *They are the last teeth you get!*

Make it a habit Start brushing and flossing early. Brush at least twice a day Floss at least once a day Rinse mouth out with tap water after eating sweets and foods high in starch.

Pink Eye Caused by bacteria Eyes get pink or red Pain Blurry vision Sensitive to light burning or itching of the eye May be watery or may contain pus in the eye Can be caught from others (contagious)

Ways to keep your eyes protected: Wear sunglasses Don’t look into the sun Eat carrots Go to the eye doctor each year Don’t rub your eyes often

Swimming can wash away the earwax Bacteria grows in the ear Ear canal gets red and swollen. Don’t usually get it from taking a shower or bath Swimmers Ear is NO Fun

Swimmers Ear is No Fun! How to Prevent Swimmers Ear: 1.Wear earplugs in the water 2.Swim in clean water 3.Wipe excess water out of ears 4.Avoid beauty products in the ear. (ex. Hairspray)

How To Keep Your Ear’s Healthy Wear earplugs at music concerts and loud places Keep the volume down on your stereo and headphones Don’t poke around in your ear’s with Q-tips TO LOUD!!!
