School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering Are you interested in applying engineering science to design? If so, this is the course for you. Our BEng and MEng courses in Design Engineering include the broad base of engineering science found in mechanical engineering degrees, but have a strong focus on design methodologies, modern computer aided engineering (CAE) techniques and on the interactions between electrical/electronic systems and mechanical systems (mechatronics). Both programmes have a common Year 1 and 2 to give a comprehensive grounding in the subject. You can then make an informed choice about whether to opt for the BEng or MEng routes. The MEng offers a fast track to Chartered Engineer status providing increased breadth and depth to your studies. The MEng provides increased breadth and depth to your studies and includes a group design-and-make project in Year 3 and a major individual project in Year 4. You will also select optional modules from a wide range, including many at an advanced level, enabling you to tailor the degree to your interests and career plans. If you opt for the 3-year BEng, youll do a major individual project in Year 3 and will select several optional modules to match your interests and career plans. If you opt for the MEng, you will do a group design-and-make project in Year 3 and a major individual project in Year 4. You will also select optional modules from a wide range, including many at an advanced level, enabling you to tailor the degree to your interests and career plans. The MEng also offers specialist streams allowing you to gain expertise in either the mechanical, materials or manufacturing aspects of design – valuable for giving yourself an edge in the jobs market. Were looking for highly motivated students who are fascinated by engineering and keen to take on the challenge of designing tomorrows machines and products. Our typical entry grades are AAB to BBB, including Mathematics. We offer attractive bursaries to high flying students in all years of the course. Redesigning the wheelchair – a 3rd Year MEng Group Design & Make Project BEng / MEng Design Engineering UCAS codes H150 (MEng)/H151 (BEng) School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering Design audit – a forensic study of a domestic kettle Use of product design software for CAD and rendering. Engineering tools used to analyse design performance.

School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering Qualifying Stage (Year 1) The first year will give you a broad introduction to Engineering, covering design (including computer-aided engineering, engineering drawing and a design & make project), engineering science and maths, as well as helping you to develop your communication and team-work skills. Part I (Year 2) Year 2 develops key design skills, knowledge and experience, with increasingly challenging projects to test and improve your abilities. At the end of the year, you will make your choice of either MEng or BEng degree paths (there is a minimum attainment level for progression to the MEng). Part II (Year 3) All students undertake a major project in Year 3; a group design & make for MEng and an individual project for BEng. These are complemented by a mix of core and optional modules covering further design, engineering science and management studies. A selection of the optional modules is shown below. MEng students can opt for one of the specialist streams to give themselves expertise in particular areas. Part III (Year 4) In Year 4, you will undertake a major individual project that will take 33% of your time throughout the year. This will allow you to do some advanced research work into a subject area of your choice. Taught modules are at a more advanced level to give you in-depth knowledge and understanding. There is also good scope for studying other subjects, either to follow your interests, or to tailor the course to your career plans. School of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering Year 1 Design & Manufacture 1 Mechanics of Solids 1 Mechanics & Thermodynamics of Fluids 1 Electromechanical Systems 1 Materials and Materials Forming Engineering Mathematics Professional Studies Year 2 Design & Manufacture 2 Electromechanical Systems 2 Design Audit Mechanics of Solids 2 Materials 2 Manufacturing 2 Engineering Mathematics Management Studies 1 Year 3 BEng BEng Individual Project Computer Aided Engineering Ergonomics and Product Design Management Studies 2 6 engineering options Year 3 MEng Group Design & Make Computer Modelling Techniques Management Studies 2 6 engineering options Year 4 MEng MEng Individual Project 8 engineering options Year 3 Options include: Engineering Biomaterial Structures, Concurrent Engineering, Flexible Automated Manufacture, Finite Element Analysis, Integrated Aerospace Design, Manufacturing Process Capability, Polymer Engineering, Conservation and Recycling of Materials, Entrepreneurship & Business, Processing and Properties of Materials, Aerospace Manufacturing Technology, Control and Instrumentation, Fibre Reinforced Composites Engineering, Stress Analysis Techniques Year 4 Options include: Advanced Materials, Advanced Technology Review, Cognitive Ergonomics, Surface Engineering and Characterisation, Work Organisation and Job Design, Project Management, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Human-Computer Systems, Lean Manufacturing, Rapid Product Development, Technology and Knowledge Management Common 1st and 2nd year for all Design Engineering courses
