Subjunctive Mood: (conditional, contrary- to -fact.) When you use if-clauses, there may be two possibilities: 1. Something may possible happen 2. or it is just imaginary, and nothing will happen. When you talk about imaginary situation in the present or future or when you talk about situations which are impossible, if is followed by a past form, and main clause has a modal such as would / might / could.
