“Lamb to the Slaughter”

Heinz president reveals he is allergic to tomatoes X-Games star seriously injured while riding scooter Bill Gates’ personal computer hacked by teenager

A difference between appearance and reality, expectation and result, or meaning and intention What happens is the opposite of what the characters or reader expect. Mr. and Mrs. White receive their 200 pounds, but at the expense of their son. A difference between what the characters think and what the audience/reader knows. While a teenage character is telling her friend how ugly the principal is, he is standing right behind them. Words are used to suggest the opposite of what is meant. The town of Sleepy Hollow is anything but sleepy with the Headless Horseman on the loose.

Decide which type of IRONY is being shown by the example: A.Dramatic Irony B.Situational Irony C.Verbal Irony Shakespeare’s As You Like It is a story of mistaken identity in which the audience is aware of the true identities of the characters involved, but the characters are often confused because of disguises.

Decide which type of IRONY is being shown by the example: A.Dramatic Irony B.Situational Irony C.Verbal Irony The protagonist in “The Necklace” works for years to replace an expensive necklace that she borrowed and lost only to learn in the end that the necklace was a fake.

Decide which type of IRONY is being shown by the example: A.Dramatic Irony B.Situational Irony C.Verbal Irony You buy a pizza at full price after looking all over the house and not finding your coupon. You return home with the pizza and grab a paper plate out of the cupboard. Just as you are about to eat a piece of pizza, you notice the coupon on top of the plate.

Decide which type of IRONY is being shown by the example: A.Dramatic Irony B.Situational Irony C.Verbal Irony Your friend asks you how you did on your math test. You failed, but you sarcastically respond, “It went great!”

Decide which type of IRONY is being shown by the example: A.Dramatic Irony B.Situational Irony C.Verbal Irony In “The Most Dangerous Game” the antagonist kidnaps and hunts people. When he says, “We’ll visit my training school…It’s in the cellar. I have about a dozen pupils down there,” he is referring to captives and a prison.

Decide which type of IRONY is being shown by the example: A.Dramatic Irony B.Situational Irony C.Verbal Irony You are watching a movie. The shot shows a split screen on which the viewer can see two characters talking on the phone, but they can’t see each other. The two characters have mistaken each others’ voices for different characters.

The perspective from which the story is told; Who is the narrator? The narrator is a part of the story. We know only that character’s thoughts and feelings. The narrator is NOT a part of the story. We know the thoughts and feelings of only the main character. The narrator is NOT a part of the story. We know the thoughts and feelings of ALL of the characters.

Emotional response Identify and explain some instances of irony Identify the point of view…how would the story be different if told from a different point of view
