Physical Activity Module: Data Analysis Issues Jennifer Pennock Ottawa Public Health

Physical Activity Working Group Durham Middlesex London Ottawa Toronto

Background Need for a physical activity module Physical activity module working group Considered pre-existing survey instruments: – CCHS – BRFSS – IPAQ Consultation with CFLRI

International Physical Activity Questionnaire Undergone validity and reliability testing Valid in ages 15 to 65 Long and Short versions Being used by CFLRI to complete Physical Activity Monitor Short Last 7 day recall used in RRFSS First appeared in RRFSS January, 2003

IPAQ Scoring Protocol Algorithm of: – Number of days per week – Time spent (minutes) doing activity – Activity level (vigorous, moderate, walking) MET minutes per week Derives four levels of ‘risk’

How Much? Canada’s Physical Activity Guide: 1 hr per day CDC: 1 hr per day US Surgeon General: 150 min in 5 sessions over a week WHO: 1 hr per day

The Four Risk Levels Lower Risk7 days of activity per week AND 1500 MET min per week AND includes 3+ days 20 minutes vigorous activity Reduced Risk 7 days of activity AND 1500 MET min OR 3+ days vigorous activity AND 1500 MET min per week Significant Risk 3+ days vigorous activity for 20 min 5+ days mod/walk for 30 min 5 days activity achieving 600 MET min Highest Risk Does not meet above

Ottawa Results CFLRI Sample Risk LevelImpactPop’n Estimate Lower RiskMinimum amount for health benefits 44% Reduced Risk Prevents obesity, chronic disease 23% Significant Risk At risk for chronic disease and obesity 19% Highest RiskPremature death due to CV disease 14%

That’s not what the CCHS said… OHS 1996 % of pop’n CCHS 2001 % of pop’n Active21% Moderate27%28% Inactive52%51%

IPAQ vs. CCHS CCHS looks only at leisure time activity IPAQ crosses all domains: leisure time, domestic, occupational and transport related activity Do not compare IPAQ results with CCHS

The Good News…. Comprehensive measure of physical activity Provincial and National comparisons! Syntax is written!
