ePortfolio Initial Reference Model How can ePortfolio deliver Priority 2 of the eStrategy (Personalisation) and other reforms? The Reference Model is reviewing the chains of key domain services; Identifying gaps and priorities for the development of webservices; Outlining the interfaces required for ePortfolio enabled services; The key deliverable for March 2006: - a set of profiles from which a simpler information model than IMS LIP can be developed which is capable of supporting implementation of the eStrategy.

ePortfolio Initial Reference Model Abstract Use Case: A chain of Services to produce an Individual Learning Plan

Trigger 1.An assessment result Mark+comments from formative assessment; Requires an assessment interface (the hatpin) ePortfolio Initial Reference Model

2. I call this information into an ePortfolio enabled Personal Development Service.

ePortfolio Initial Reference Model 3. I review the results against my goals...

ePortfolio Initial Reference Model 3. I review the results against my goals …in the context of past reflections… (saving my current reflections as I go)

ePortfolio Initial Reference Model 5. …taking account of pathway information about the grades I need to meet my goals. 3. I review the results against my goals …in the context of past reflections… (saving my current reflections as I go)

ePortfolio Initial Reference Model At this point I will probably want to chat informally with my friends What do you get? What should I do? We may have a preferred service we use (say MSN)

ePortfolio Initial Reference Model Personal Development is often a collaborative activity Yet IMS LIP has no concept of Group Informal and collaborative learning are important gaps to be filled. Comment: -

ePortfolio Initial Reference Model 6. I make available some of my reflections to my advisor in an Information Advice Guidance Planning Service

ePortfolio Initial Reference Model 6. I make available some of my reflections to my advisor in an Information Advice Guidance Planning Service 7. Pathway Info is called.

ePortfolio Initial Reference Model Pathway information is the subject of the XRCI Reference Model Comment: - Although PDP has been core to JISC, little work has been done on planning. IMS LIP does not cover plans!

ePortfolio Initial Reference Model 8. My dialogue with my advisor is recorded (The learner may well be accessing other advice from other sources)

ePortfolio Initial Reference Model 8. My dialogue with my advisor is recorded (The learner may well be accessing other advice from other sources) 9. I negotiate a formal learning plan with my advisor

ePortfolio Initial Reference Model 8. My dialogue with my advisor is recorded (The learner may well be accessing other advice from other sources) 9. I negotiate a formal learning plan with my advisor 10. I can enrol on a new set of classes

ePortfolio looks more like an application than a service Past library work on repositories may be adaptable for an ePortfolio application There may be specific ePortfolio services supporting personalisation and integration This requires more work on pedagogy In particular for informal collaborative learning ePortfolio Initial Reference Model Some issues: -

Transition between episodes of learning in education and employment is a key issue for policy & practice; Profiles of eP information have been transferred between school, college and university; Chaining back these profiles imply the services generating the information; Chaining forward these profiles imply the webservices consuming the information & generating new information; Proposals for the reform of HE admissions published by DfES Improving the HE applications process" propose the following: - ( ) ePortfolio Initial Reference Model Next Steps: -

ePortfolio Initial Reference Model Stage 2? There is also much work going on in the sector in relation to the development of e-portfolios, the content of which could include a portfolio of evidence compiled by the student, a developmental CV and a transcript or learner record. This includes work by UCAS and the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) in the area of e-portfolios and online applications, and also development through the British Standards Institution of the technical standard UKLEAP, based on international standards, to support transfer of learner information. Additionally there are links into Europe and the Europass learner record This type of information, representing an up-to-date collection of a student's achievement, could be used by HEIs to help inform admissions decisions. It could be a particularly useful record for those students not following the traditional A- level or Higher based route into HE.
