The Open Connected TV (OCTV) project 2011/08/28

Connected TV: dream and reality The dream Connected TV: the means to provide the much sought- after convergence between traditional broadcast television and various new forms of video delivery The reality The largely proprietary implementations of Connected TV impede the development of a promising new market of content, products, services and applications. 2010/03/31 The long path to the digital media age 2

The OCTV goal The Open Connected TV (OCTV) project has the goal to develop a technical specification and an industry-grade implementation (platform) of OCTV that is based on international standards. The OCTV Specification will enable the creation and the OCTV Platform will accelerate the development of a broad market of products, content, services and applications designed to enrich one-way TV services with interoperable multichannel two-way content access and delivery. 2010/03/31 The long path to the digital media age 3

The Open Connected TV specification The Open Connected TV (OCTV) specification supports interactive rich media streaming services in a plurality of application domains, e.g. to enrich one-way TV services with support to interoperable multichannel two-way content access and delivery, interactive video service on mobile networks etc. OCTV creates the conditions for the development of a global market for video services by providing a technical specification based on international standards and an industry-grade implementation of an Open Connected TV platform. 2010/03/31 The long path to the digital media age 4

DMP – goals and results The Digital Media Project (DMP) was established on 1 st December 2003 with the mission to …promote continuing successful development, deployment and use of digital media that respect Creator and rights holders rights to exploit their works End user wish to fully enjoy the benefits of digital media Various value-chain player interest to provide products and services DMP has specified an “Interoperable DRM Platform” by Adopting most MPEG-21 technologies Adding a few that were missing Making an OSS implementation (Chillout®) 5 The Digital Media Project status report 2010/10/24

An extended d igital media platform Recent developments show that successful businesses can be built around proprietary ecosystems of services, content, devices and users The Digital Media Project (DMP) envisions a world of end-to-end interoperable digital media value chains serving the needs of a large number of users So far DMP’s focus has been the Digital Rights Management component of digital media value chains It is time for DMP to extend its coverage by enabling interoperable digital media value chains The Digital Media Project status report 2010/10/24 8

A collaborative project for a digital media platform Development of a commercial-grade implementation of an extended MPEG-M platform To speed up market friendly deployment of advanced multimedia services To be made available for exclusive use by DMP members who have contributed to its development P21-2: a digital media platform for the second decade of the 21 st century MPEG-M: a joint ISO/IEC/ITU standard called Multimedia Service Platform Technologies The Digital Media Project status report 2010/10/24 9
