REFORMATION This led to a reform movement against the Roman Catholic Church called the Reformation.

REFORMATION By the late Renaissance, people had begun to complain about corruption in the Catholic Church.

WHAT WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO PAY TO ABSOLVE YOURSELF OF SIN? Note: Remember, you want to go to heaven!

INDULGENCES Documents given by the pope that excused a person from penalties for sins he or she had committed. Indulgences could also be purchased by the living on behalf of the dead to reduce their time in purgatory.

PURGATORY A place where souls went to be punished for their sins while they were alive.

PURGATORY Once they had paid for their sins, the souls went to heaven.

JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH Only God can forgive sins. Church can’t forgive sins. People had to have FAITH IN GOD to be forgiven. Martin Luther’s idea.

COUNTER REFORMATION The Catholic Church trying to fix it’s own problems. They needed to keep members of the church - $$$. The fight against the Protestant Reformation. We’ve got to keep it clean! We can’t lose more $

JESUITS Led by Jesuit priest Francis Xavier who was sainted for his work. Traveled throughout Asia. Through their efforts, the Catholic Reformation reached far beyond Europe.

THE COUNCIL OF TRENT Restated the importance of the clergy in interpreting the Bible. Created new rules the clergy had to follow. Officially rejected the ideas of Reformation leaders.

HUGUENOTS French Protestants. Fought against Catholics in the Thirty Years War. French King was Catholic. Had been imprisoned because of their faith.

THIRTY YEARS WAR A long series of wars that involved many of the countries of Europe. It began as a religious conflict but grew into a war about political control.

Edict of Nantes Granted religious freedom in most of France after the war between French Catholics and Protestants ended. It was issued by King Henry IV.
