3 REASONS FOR GEORGIA COLONY 1. CHARITABLE – provide a new colony for the poor and those Protestants that were being persecuted by Catholics 2. MILITARY DEFENSE – the colony could protect the successful colony of South Carolina from attack by Spanish, French and Indians 3. ECONOMIC – the trustees wanted colonist to plant crops that could help the “mother country” (England). Crops like mulberry trees, grapes and olives trees were to be grown
1. Georgia was named after King George II 2. A trustee is a person that is has the responsibility to run the colony on behalf of others (king) 3. The original GA charter lasted for 21 years 4. By limiting the charter to 21 years, the King George II insured that the colony would be under the control of the crown in the future.
LIMITATIONS Trustees could make rules & regulations, not laws Women were not allowed to inherit or own land Could own up to 500 acres of land (if paid own way to GA) Could not sell or rent land – no male heir, back to trustees No slavery, Catholics or hard liquor (rum) in GA Trustees could not own land, receive a salary or hold public office Charter last for 21 yrs Laws approved by King Geographical boundaries were est.
ALLOWANCES / REQUIREMENTS Males required to serve in the militia (citizen army) Required to plant mulberry trees (silk production) on part of the land Adult males given 50 acres of land (45 country and 5 near the edge of town) Each additional male or indentured servant would entitle you to an additional 50 acres of land per person A executive comm. governed Allowed to bring indentured servants & employees
