Read about Markella “ You Looked Better on MySpace” pp Class will be paused at this time for 7 minutes. Please DO NOT post during this time. Read and Re-read the article. Please let us know when you are finished. Class will resume after 7 minutes. Write a short paragraph of 5-7 sentences addressing these questions. 1. What are some of the implications of the title? 2. Have you ever or would you ever sign up to use a website for matchmaking? Why or why not?

Share your paragraph………………………………….. Please be patient as we read each one. Please respond to your classmates posting.

Thesis sentence -- A single sentence with an essay, located at the end of the introductory paragraph. The thesis sentence functions as a "signpost" to signal to the reader the main ideas to come later in the essay.

The thesis states the one key idea about the essay. For your essay you need a thesis statement about your dream job and the connection to your life experiences. Ex. Mary’s passion to become a social worker for Texas, stems from her experience as a foster care child in Houston, TX.

It should be the main point of your essay. It should assert an idea about your topic. It should be specific and detailed as possible. It may suggest the organization of your essay. It should not be a direct announcement. It should be fresh, interesting and original.

Main idea -- Each main idea in the thesis is discussed by a separate paragraph in the essay.

Tell a story, share a funny life experience. Use descriptive words, entice your reader. Give an example: Ex. (to explain your job, hobby, school life and experience.) Define an idea: Ex. ( Explain information that the reader may not know). Make comparisons: Ex: ( If you’re writing about your favorite animal compare it to another). Make distinctions Ex:(If you’re writing about foods, cultures, show the difference between the two) Give reasons for your topic or thesis.

Transitions words help to alert the reader that you may be changing the topic or starting a new paragraph. Share some of the transition words that you are familiar with from the list on pp 483

Based on your readings what three components are required in a thesis statement? What is the thesis for your autobiography? How does your thesis identify the main goal of your autobiography?

From your readings you will learn that ALL writing for college must be written in Standard American English. What does that mean? Complete sentences, business language, not in text language, slang, abbreviations etc. american/

Do you have a cell phone? What do you use it for? How do you feel about punctuality? Is it important for you and your friends to be on time?

Read pp 489 Calling in Late” Class will be paused for 7 minutes during this time please let us know when you are finished. Thank you!

Outline -- A tool from the writing process that you use after brainstorming to sort and organize main ideas. When you use an outline, you can more easily keep control of how your essay functions. Outlines are usually written with Roman numerals where letters stand for numbers like this: I = 1, II = 2, III = 3, IV = 4, V = 5

Title/Thesis : Calling in Late I. Cell phone use has made calling in late a common practice.( topic sentence) A. One study showed that people believe that by calling and changing the plan, they erase the fact that they are late. B. Add a detail to support C. Add a detail to support II. Business owners are seeing a change in their clients behavior. A. More and more people call restaurants to say they will be late for their reservations. B. Add a detail or example to support C. Add a detail or example to support. III. Cell phone use is affecting social relationships A. Add a detail to support B. Add a detail to support C. Add a detail to support IV. Conclusion The author concludes that people who get rid of their cell phones might have an increase in punctuality in their lives and that business owners are striking back at tardy cell phone users.

1. Why do you think some people are often late for appointments while others are always on time or early? Contrast the attitudes of these two types of people. How do you think they feel about themselves and others? 2. Some people want technology to block the cell-phone signals in areas such as schools, movie theatres, and concerts. Do you think this is appropriate? Why or why not? 3. Some people believe that by giving people the ability to be reached anywhere, we are increasing their workloads and stress because employees can never totally get away from work. Some people use laptops to work when on vacation, even at the beach. Do you think there are more advantages or more disadvantages to this trend toward constant contact? 4. Some people’s cell phones ring with long musical pieces. Others believe that this trend leads to increased “sound pollution.” Imagine that you’re on a bird-watching expedition when someone’s phone goes off, playing a loud song. Imagine that you’re riding the subway on your way to an important meeting. You’re trying to read some important papers when the person seated next to you gets a call announced by blaring, endless rock music. Should people be allowed to have long, loud ring tones on cell phones? Why or why not?

Imagine that you have completed your program at Kaplan University and have been offered your dream job! The company or organization you will be working for wants to issue a press release announcing that you are joining them and in what capacity. In order to do so, they need a minimum 500 Word autobiographical statement from you.

One paragraph that identifies who you are, where you live, the company or organization that has hired you, and your new job title. One paragraph that gives professional details about you and your life— your age, family, hobbies, etc. (NOTE: this is a professional biography so you should limit personal details to what is appropriate). One paragraph that talks about your education. You should include high school or your GED, any previous college experience, and your Kaplan program. One paragraph that details professional experiences, honors and awards, or other related details. One concluding paragraph that reinforces where you will be working, your job title, and what you will be doing.

I. Introductory paragraph (general to specific ideas) - identifies who you are, where you live, the company or organization that has hired you, and your new job title. Thesis sentence: II. Body paragraph 1 gives professional details about you and your life—your age, family, hobbies, etc. (NOTE: this is a professional biography so you should limit personal details to what is appropriate). III. Body paragraph 2 details professional experiences, honors and awards, or other related details. IV. Body paragraph 3 talks about your education. You should include high school or your GED, any previous college experience, and your Kaplan program. V. Concluding paragraph (specific to general ideas) reinforces where you will be working, your job title, and what you will be doing.
