Content Solar Energy Wind Power Water Energy Geothermal Energy

Solar energy Different forms of energy The reason - surface receives about 1400 W/m2 About 19% of the total energy

sunlight hits a solar cell

Sunlight hits an absorbing surface

Sunlight strikes a mirror or a fiber optic cable

The map is showing us which countries get the most hours of sunshine each day

Wind energy

Rapid growth predicted in the global wind energy market

Annual new installations worldwide will increase from MW to MW in the next ten years Globally, there could be some MW installed wind capacity by 2017.

Assets Wind does no cost anything Produces no waste or greenhouse gases. The land beneath can usually still be used for farming. Wind farms can be tourist attractions. A good method of supplying energy to remote areas.

Drawbacks The wind is not always predictable - some days have too little wind and some days we have too much of it. Suitable areas for wind farms are often near the coast, where land is expensive. Some people feel that covering the landscape with these towers is unsightly. It is a danger for the birds and they can get killed. Can affect television reception if you live nearby. Can be noisy. Wind generators have a reputation for making a constant, low noise all the time. Wind turbine developments on land are quite commonly met with anger from the people the live nearby.

Growth in Global Wind Power Installed Capacity Top Ten Wind Energy Producing Countries, 2006

The future?

Containerships pulled by huge canvas -already reality!-

The Magenn Air Rotor System (MARS) Magenn Power plans to ship their first official product, a 10 to 25kW version in the later part of 2009/10.

Geothermal Energy  Energy is generated from the heat in the Earth Source of Geothermal Energy: Radioactive Nuclei down in the Earth (70%) Some Energy left from the Earth formation Metorite Impacts

Temperature in the Earth

Regions of Geothermal Energy

Ways to use geothermal Energy Hot Dry Rock Geothermal Heat Pump (works like a Fridge) Direct Water Heating

Pros and Cons Advantages: Heat Pumps can be used to heat and cool Environmentally friendly, little visual pollution Works long time (up to 50 years) The energy is always available Disadvantages You need very much money to invest (profitable in the long term) Installation can be cause of earthquakes (often build in sensible regions) Its not profitable in every region Efficiency depends of the quality of the installed system

water energy plant

Disadvantages with water energy Vegetation Fish, animals Visual Pollution Pollution and destruction of land through construction of dams

Advantages with water energy No carbon dioxide release It’s renewable There are large amounts of water available Constant availability Can store the water No production cost There are always places where waves are present

Differences Norways main energy source is pure water energy But Norway has a big export of fossil fuels

Possibility for water energy

Other water energy types Tidal Energy Wave energy use energy from the movements under water Use the energy on the water surface
