ELPSS RLO Scripting Templates VERSION 3 (Jan 09)

Using these Templates The ELPSS Scripting Templates comprise the following: –This PowerPoint file containing a number of templates for different types of pages, scripting principles and guidelines. You can copy and duplicate pages in this PowerPoint presentation to create the structure of your RLO. Feel free to use the PowerPoint drawing tools in order to illustrate the content you want on each page – but don’t spent to long – you can also draw/annotate on the page using a tablet PC. Please ensure that any text you want displayed on each page is written in the template exactly how you want it to appear on screen to the learner. Use the Notes function in PowerPoint to explain any sequencing, movement or animation required. On the first slide please provide a ‘Contents Listing’ of the RLO listing page numbers and titles. On the second slide please provide a list of require assets (e.g. photos, illustrations, videos etc.)

ELPSS RLO Scripting Principles Every ELPSS RLO will start with an introduction page that specifies the learning outcome of the RLO, and finish with a summary page recapping what the learner should now know / be able to do following the RLO. ELPSS RLOs will use a ‘page’-like structure. Each page will be ONE of the following (more detailed guidance for each page type follows on the next slide): –Introduction Page: will specify the learning outcomes of the RLO –Information Transfer Page: Convey information / learning points, learner is passive. This might include the use of animations, images, audio and video elements. –Video Activity Page: Learner is asked to watch a video – should be prompted to be thinking about something specific whilst watching the video. –Interactive Page (2 column or landscape format): Learner must interact with the page to conduct an activity. All interactive elements to be contained in the white box and instructions outside the white box. –Self Assessment Page: will contain questions (any number from 1 to 10). –Summary Page: Will recap the learning outcomes. You should be able to quantify (estimate at least) the amount of time each page will take the learner to complete. As a general rule there should be a maximum of 3 sequential Information Transfer Pages before some kind of activity page (either Video, Interactive or Question Page).

ELPSS RLO Scripting Guidelines Page TypeGuidelinesTemplates to Use Introduction Page Short page specifying the learning outcomes for the Learning Object – expressed to the learner as an ‘activity’. Use a ‘hook’ to get the learner interested. PP: Intro Page Information Transfer Page These pages could involve animations to illustrate a learning point or pose a question. Screen content might include Flash animations, video, images and diagrams. PP: Info Transfer Silent Video Activity Page This is a specific page where a video clip is shown to the learner. We want to make this use of video active, so the learner should be directed to think about a particular aspect of the video whilst watching. Alternatively the video can be incorporated into a more involved Interactive Page. The learner is in control of starting and replaying the video. The activity is introduced using text on the screen. PP: Video Page Interactive Page These pages will take a variety of formats but will always involve the learner in some kind of activity, using a simulation, ISE etc. If the whole of the activity will not fit on one screen then the author will need to think carefully about how the activity can be split into 2 or more pages. The activity must always contain clear instructions. These instructions must be outside the white box containing the interactive elements of the page. PP: Interactive 2 column OR PP: Interactive landscape Self Assessment Page Question types to choose form are: Multiple Choice (single), Multiple Choice (double), Multiple Response, Hotspot and Fill in the Blanks. The test starts with an intro page, the students attempt the questions and are then given feedback on their answers. For each question authors must provide the “Correct” feedback and “Incorrect” feedback PP: Self assessment pages Summary PageShort page re-capping the learning outcomes for the learner.PP: Summary Page
