States of Matter
Let’s review matter… Matter is anything that takes up space & has mass. It occurs in three states: Solid Liquid Gas
Solids definite shape and definite volume. The particles are in a tight, regular pattern. The particles are close together and vibrate A solid does not take the shape of a container in which it is placed. 2 types: Crystalline – orderly, 3D arrangement of particles Amorphous – particles are in no particular order
Liquid definite volume but no definite shape. Particles slide past each other to take the shape of the container. Particles are further apart, and can move freely
Gas No definite shape, no definite volume. The particles in gas are much farther apart than those in a liquid or solid. Gas particles move at high speeds in all directions.
Plasma No definite shape, no definite volume. Particles move freely in all directions smashing into each other breaking particles apart Examples in nature: Lightning Aurora Borealis
