Chapter 5 Neoplasia Su Min ( 苏敏)

CPC-CASE : (N0A6-1) A 37 year old man found a dark brown lesion on the skin of his face, just in front of the ear. He ignored the lesion, even though it became larger and started to bleed. Then he began to develop many more spots on his face and neck. At this point, he went to the doctor who did a biopsy and gave him some treatment. However, he died 8 months later.

(Offered by Prof.Orr) (Left) The early skin lesion. (Center) The appearance of the many lesions on his face and neck. (Right) The cut surface of his liver at autopsy.

(Left) A cross section of a rib at autopsy. (right) His heart at autopsy. ( Offered by Prof.Orr)

(Left) Histologic section of normal skin. (Right) Histologic section of a skin lesion. (Offered by Prof.Orr)

What is your diagnosis? What features of neoplastic disease are shown in these photographs?

Major Objectives: To master the concepts of: 1. Atypia. 2. Tumor growth and spread, including dysplasia, carcinoma in situ, invasion and metastasis. 3. Differences between benign and malignant tumors, carcinoma and sarcoma. 4. Nomenclature and principles of classification. 5. Pathological and clinical features of common tumors. To understand the etiological factors and cellular mechanisms involved in tumor development.
