Tattoos & Piercings By: Katherine Castaneda Brenda Arellano

History… Greek/Romans: Criminals and Slaves Types of tattoos given to criminals 18 th Century soldiers Late 19 th century prisoners/criminals Lower class vs. Upper class Electric tattoo machine (Sam O’Reilly) Circus late 19 th century-1940 End of WWII

History continued… Fashionable again during the 1960s and 70s 1938 FDA- Ink 1950s physicians three states implemented regulations, 7 banned tattooing all together 1989 CDC develops a system to prevent health risks 1999 NEHA guide book 2003, 39 states with tattooing regulations, 35 with piercing regulations

Deviant Behavior According to researchers having tattoos and piercings are a cause in deviant behavior such as trying drugs, alcohol, violence and sexual activity. A Survey was done to 2,080 students in a public university to see how many people with them have been involved in sexual activity and came back with a high level of percentage. Saying that people with tattoos and piercings are more likely to be involved in sexual activity at an early age.

Tattooed Women Men Approach Women 1 st study: Women with vs. women without 2 nd study: 440 men asked about women with tattoos (promiscuity) Negative Attitudes 269 participants answer questions regarding tattooed women Size of tattoo

Jobs The main concern will always be how the company would be viewed or represented, with that being said you are most likely not allowed to have any type of visual piercings or tattoos being shown, although keeping in mind that not most jobs require this. People for many years have been labeling people with tattoos as, gang members, criminals and an outcast in society. Making it harder for them to find a job and putting many of their dream jobs on hold.

Jobs continued… Many of us don’t see it that way we say it as a way of self- expression and self-image, but companies and your boss see it as rebellious and calling attention to yourself. Jobs such as: Walmart, Borders, Ford Motor Company, Wahoos etc. allow them as long as they meet a certain criteria.
