COLLECTION TRENDS  Are we at peak TVs?? Peak CRTs??  FY13-14 reporting indicates many Counties are now seeing around 70% of their electronics weight is TVs  Counties with “older” (8-10 years) electronics recycling programs are seeing closer to 50% TVs

WHAT IS NCDENR DOING?  Working with manufacturers to help them understand their obligations  Work with other states & EPA  State Electronics Recycling Service Contract  Best management practices for electronics management  Facilitate the sharing of information between local governments

TELEVISION RECYCLING  20,726,028 lbs. of TVs processed from NC in FY12-13 at $0.15/pound equals: =$3,108,904

CATHODE RAY TUBE (CRT) CONSTRUCTION PANEL GLASS – (screen) 2/3 of the CRT’s mass. 0-4% lead oxide FUNNEL - 22%-28% lead oxide NECK – 30% lead oxide SOLDER (or Frit) % lead YOKE - The coils of copper wire around the neck of the CRT are known as the yoke; desirable to scavengers

CATHODE RAY TUBE (CRT) LEAD CONTENT  Average weight of a CRT television – 40 lbs.  A CRT TV is approximately 60% glass  Approximately 15% of this glass is lead  = 3.6 lbs. of lead per television As of June 30, 2013, over 54 million pounds of televisions have been recycled in NC If all were CRTs = Close to 5 million pounds of lead

CRT DOWNSTREAM MARKETS  Smelting (3 major smelters in US & Can) - ~30,000 tons  Glass-to-glass: ~80,000 tons (VideoCon in India)  ADC for MSW - 50,000 tons (Kuusakoski) Doe Run, Missouri CRT downstream markets are changing rapidly

CRT DOWNSTREAM MARKETS…  Deleading/Glass Separation:  Dlubak Glass  Nulife Glass - NY Mill tons  Ceramic Tiles:  Com2 - 15,000 tons (production to start by Nov 2014)  Fireclay tile, California  And others Glass tiles for residential made from CRT glass
